  • Family- and dog-friendly site on the outskirts of Hay-on-Wye
  • A 10-minute walk to Hay Festival site; half an hour to the town centre
  • Communal freezer; toilet and shower block and a washing-up area
Surrounded by the splendid countryside of Mid Wales, Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park is an excellent accommodation option – whether you’re into hiking or into the rather more sedentary activity of losing yourself into a good book. The family- and dog-friendly site is a mile and a half from Hay-on-Wye, the small town on the English border known for its concentration of independent and specialist bookshops. The town centre is a mere five-minute drive away, or you can walk it (along a country path) in about half an hour. What’s more, the park sits a 10-minute walk from the grounds of the famed Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, which takes place at the start of summer (late May–early June) and draws authors, artists and other creative characters to this corner of the world. That’s the bookworms sorted. What about the walkers? Well, there’s plenty of choice for them, too, with Brecon Beacons National Park within a five-minute drive. Explore the park’s hills, woodlands and waterfalls, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as water voles, badgers and bats. It’s worth lingering until nightfall, for the Brecon Beacons is a recognised International Dark Sky Reserve, so you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Milky Way and assorted constellations. The proximity to the River Wye also means there’s plenty to do on the water, with several outfits renting out paddleboards and canoes, and arranging guided river trips or canyoning excursions. After all that activity, you might well be ravenous, so stop for a bite to eat in Hay-on-Wye, or purchase your provisions there before heading back to base and getting the barbecue started. There is a communal freezer on site, as well as a large washing-up area with a dishwasher. Other amenities include a shower and toilet block with an accessible/family-sized room.

Powered grass campsite

Liked This is one of the very best campsites we have ever stayed in, so much consideration to detail, cleanliness and comfort. All the facilities were first class clean and modern; the surrounding views were breathtakingly beautiful and it was so quiet, apart from a few farm vehicles but these guys work so hard to give us the food and countryside we love. .
Another big plus was being close to the town to walk to for amazing little book shops, cafes and wild swimming in the river. Oh and lots of excellent places to eat out, including pubs.

Disliked Absolutely nothing

Disliked Quite costly when there's no water or drainage at the pitch.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Friendly staff, excellent facilities, well maintained site with lovely views.

Disliked Nothing to dislike but like many sites the WiFi is iffy. One of the reasons for choosing this site was the potential to walk into Hay with our dog but this wasn’t available in practice because of very tall styles on the route. With a small dog you can lift over a style or with no dog then it would be great but with a larger dog it does mean you have to drive into Hay.

Local attractions

Spreading along the banks of the River Wye, The Weir Garden (half an hour’s drive) has shaded waterside paths dotted with benches for picnics. Birdlife abounds here – from finches to mallards and woodpeckers – and if you’re lucky you might spot an otter, too. There’s also a walled garden and a glasshouse. The 13th-century cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes) holds the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world drawn on a calf’s skin and adorned with real and mythical beasts, plus dog-headed men and one-legged people. After getting to know these unusual characters, visit the Museum of Cider, with its huge presses, and stock up on this locally made drink. To learn a thing or two about Wales’s mining history, head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum (50 minutes), which occupies a former coal mine. Don a hard hat and join the underground tour, which takes in both the coal faces and the engine houses.
