  • Spacious and peaceful site with lovely Brecon Beacons views
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and the Hay Festival site
Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common? Answer: they’ll all be beaming from ear to ear at Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye. If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a supremely suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area: thanks to a winning combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms, and a laundry with washing machines, dryers and irons, you can emerge from the hills looking pressed and clean enough for a literary luncheon, or a dapper dinner in town. (If you prefer your dining alfresco, barbecues are allowed on site.) With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

What customers say

Impeccably clean and well-kept campsite with friendly staff. Guests rave about the spotless washrooms, roomy pitches, and lovely country setting near Hay-on-Wye. Peaceful vibe, though some pitches are a bit sloped and there's occasional road noise.

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild, sloping)

Liked A lovely campsite for a great price. We booked the wild camping option which had a great view and soft grass. Very clean showers and toilets and good wifi. Nice and close to Hay on Wye too.

Disliked The toilets/showers had a radio station playing very loudly constantly which was a bit off putting.

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild, sloping)

Liked This is an absolutely fantastic campsite. The toilets and showers were amazing - clean and well laid out. Each toilet cubicle had a shower (which was nice and hot), sink and mirror. Bonus points for having a step for little ones to wash hands and a child friendly toilet in BOTH ladies and gents. We stayed in the wild camping field and it was so lovely and peaceful. Some reviews mentioned the slope being a problem but we found it to be only a slight slope and perfectly manageable. Also, the little park for kids was a great bonus. Such good value for money!

Disliked A little shop would have been great but we knew there wasn’t one.

Love the radio on in the bathrooms

Have been before and definitely will be back

Disliked It would be great to have another shower/ toilet block - when it’s a busy weekend - 3 showers and 4 toilets can be tight!

From the manager: Hi Deborah
Thank you for your review and pictures, we are glad you loved our beautiful park. For the 10 days during the Hay Festival when we are exceptionally busy, most of our customers understand this and are happy to wait if needed, but as we are not as busy throughout the rest of the season it does not warrant any more facilities, they are more than adequate. But thank you for your feedback and we look forward to seeing you again.
Matt, Yvonne & The Team.

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries. If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury (10 minutes' drive away) to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire. If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Black Mountains’ highest peak, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes). To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping. Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.
