Cruachan farm caravan and camping park

  • Family-run park near the western end of Loch Tay
  • Loch Earn and Loch Lomond within an hour's drive
  • Laundry room on site; dogs welcome
Set in quiet countryside near the western end of Loch Tay and around an hour's drive from Loch Lomond, Cruachan Farm Caravan and Camping Park is a family-run site in a great position for sightseeing around the southern Highlands and central Scotland. Whatever kind of accommodation you opt for, you'll have access to a smart and spacious park with well-maintained amenities like a toilet and shower block and a laundry room. The site is well under a mile from the banks of Loch Tay and close to lots of other outdoor attractions: watersports, birdwatching and tracking down ancient burial sites are all popular pastimes you can get up to in the local area. It's also a 15 minutes' walk from Loch Tay Highland Lodges, where guests are welcome to use the facilities. Cruachan Farm Caravan and Camping Park is a five-minute drive to the east of Killin, a scenic spot with a castle, pubs, a supermarket and waterside walks around the gorgeous Falls of Dochart.

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Easy check in process
Great location for hill walking
Quiet site with plenty of space to pitch not to close to others
Temperature gauge on shower is nice rather than set temperature
Good washing up room with washing up liquid and sponges so did not need to bring my own
No extra charges for dogs and nice woodland walk to take the dog in the morning
Great value

Disliked: Only two showers which was fine as it was not too busy and a fairly small site
Quite far to walk down to the loch, through a woodland with fallen trees so not really suitable for carrying the paddleboard down

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Beautiful location, with Ben lawyers as the backdrop. Well cared for site and a very friendly and helpful site warden.

Disliked: The top block womens showers were difficult to use - it was hard to get the pressure and temperature right.

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: We stayed on a camping pitch, bit slopey but do-able.
Enough room for tent and our dogs.
Facilities were good and clean was a nice touch for washing up liquid and a sponge for doing dishes.
Quiet with lovely views of Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers.

Disliked: Not as good access to Loch Tay as we thought. Access through woods not great although effort has been made to make paths.

Primitive grass tent campsite (five person)

Liked: Checking in was done at the Loch Tay Highland Lodges reception which was just further along the road from Cruachan Farm Caravan and Camping Park. Friendly welcome and a useful map showing the overall layout of the two sites. The campsite itself was clean and well kept, and had accessible and clean toilet/showering facilities and access to fresh water.

Access path through the woods to the loch side was ideal for a walk and explore of the area. Boathouse was available for food and drinks.

The Cafe at Cruachan Farm Caravan and Camping Park was idea, serving a range of filled rolls and drinks. Very friendly couple running it.

Local attractions

Starting locally, Killin Castle (five minutes' drive) is definitely a landmark to explore. While here, wander down past the pretty waters at the Falls of Dochart (five minutes) and keep an eye out for wildlife. Killin Golf Club (also five minutes) is a well-liked course with nine scenic landscaped holes to try, while just a little further away at Ben Lawers Dam (10 minutes) you can get a close-up view of one of Scotland's highest Munros. After exploring Loch Tay and the local area, it's a short enough drive to Loch Tay (20 minutes), where plenty of watersports and hiking trails are on offer. The village of Aberfoyle (an hour away) is very popular with off-road cyclists who appreciate its miles of well-maintained gravel tracks, and there's also a forest park with Go Ape, a visitor centre and a hide where beady-eyed visitors may spot red squirrels among the trees. For more heritage sights, try Castle Menzies (30 minutes), an imposing 16th-century clan seat, or Stirling Castle (an hour and 10 minutes), one of the most important and impressive historic buildings in Scotland.
