Hardstanding and grass tent pitches with electric hookup
Hardstanding pitch surrounded by grass

  • Adults-only pitches in a peaceful Ayrshire walled garden
  • Girvan beach and boat trips 15 minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Ayr
  • In a certified dark-skies area for excellent stargazing
Lovely views by day, fabulous dark skies by night – and a truly peaceful atmosphere at all hours. That’s the rather tempting offering at The Walled Garden Touring Park, an adults-only site in rural Ayrshire about 10 minutes’ drive from Maybole. As the name suggests, pitches here are set in an attractive walled garden that’s part of the historic Kilkerran Estate – a location that provides both shelter and some lovely greenery and trees as the backdrop for your stay. There’s an electric hookup for each pitch, and you’ll also have access to shared facilities including a laundry room, a washing-up area, a fridge and a freezer. Toilets and showers are provided, and there’s also a chemical disposal point for the tourers. There’s a very peaceful atmosphere at this park, so you should really be able to relax as you stoke your barbecue in the evening and wait for the stars to come out. This is a certified dark-skies area so you should be in for a treat (as long as the clouds behave…). By day, you may like to start with a short stroll to the nearby waterfall before heading out into the wider area for some time hiking, cycling or exploring the region’s castles. Ayr is about 20 minutes’ drive away for some town time, and it’s a 15-minute journey to Girvan for the beach, coast walks and boat trips to Ailsa Craig. Dogs are welcome at the park, so feel free to bring them along to help you explore this quiet corner of the Scottish countryside.

Liked Setting is beautiful. Facilities are fantastic

Disliked General maintenance, grassed areas not as tidy as it used to be. Unfortunately the campers next to us where noisy spoiling the general peace of the walled garden.

Liked Quiet and Wifi

Disliked Roads to campsite were very bumpy. The car & caravan ended up filthy. Site more for seasonal campers. A bit remote. Pitches poor, not level & not easy to pitch caravan. Also have to go over grass, even though hard pitch! Facilities were unique in appearance but not modern enough.

Ed C. 1 review

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass tent campsite

Liked Great facilities, very clean and plenty of cubicles. Especially liked the female basin cubicles for private washing and changing.
The location next to a woodland allowed for great woodland walks (bring wellies) and it has a large variety of different birds and wildlife.

Disliked Being told to pitch our tent on astroTurf when there was a grass pitch available and having a light on the wall all night just outside our tent.
The 'no noise/driving' rule at certain times, was one of the main reasons for booking here and was completely ignored by the neighboring pitch, who played music, talked loudly into the night and packed up loudly at 5am and drove out at 6.30am.
This not only disturbed us but also the permanent pitch residents who we spoke to. It's disappointing that the owners don't inforce their own rules as it spoils the peace and quiet that we booked for.

Liked If it is a peaceful and quiet break you are looking for this is definitely the place to visit. Michael and Donna are very friendly and helpful. The surrounding estate is beautiful with lots of countryside walks. Great for dogs. The toilets and showers are spotless clean. Would highly recommend it

Disliked Could have done with a grip handle in the shower. Nothing else to dislike.

Local attractions

This part of the world is sometimes nicknamed the ‘Ayrshire Alps’, and it’s an excellent area for days of hiking and mountain biking – some of it pretty challenging, it should be said. There are gentler walks and bike rides to be had nearby too, along with other outdoor activities like horse riding, fishing and golf. The Galloway Forest Park (20 minutes’ drive) is a particularly good spot for some time spent among woodland and lake scenery – but don’t head home too early as this is also a Gold-Tier Dark Sky Park (the first in the UK to be designated as such, in fact). Bring your telescope or binoculars along, or see if any tours and events are being run by the Dark Sky Rangers. To take in some of the area’s heritage, head to places like Culzean Castle and Souter Johnnies Cottage or spend some time in Ayr, visiting the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (all 20 minutes away). Over at the coast, Girvan’s sandy beach (15 minutes) is a nice place to visit, and there are boat trips to wildlife-rich Ailsa Craig.
