The road to whittlieburn

  • Scenic family-run smallholding site 10 minutes' drive from Largs
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of ferries to Great Cumbrae and Bute
  • Collect and buy fresh eggs from the flock of free-range hens on site
Some will be making a swift stopover on a Scotland tour, others looking to settle in for a lengthier Largs-based break; South Whittlieburn Farm’s owner Katie is happy to welcome all sorts of guests at her family-run Ayrshire smallholding. Bag a spot here in the stunning Brisbane Glen to share the place with the horses and ponies that graze the surrounding fields, and a flock of free-range hens that generously provide fresh eggs for guests to collect and purchase for a farm breakfast. If your own animal pal fancies coming along for the ride, dogs are welcome here – the little farm track that runs by Noddsdale Water lends itself well to paw-stretching outings. Noted those stunning views from the site? (If not, skip off to flick through pics at this point…) They give you a bit of a clue that this is a most scenic area, whether facing inland towards the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park or out to sea and the Firth of Clyde. Getting down to the seaside is fairly straightforward, as the popular resort of Largs is a 10-minute drive away – home to lots of shops and places to eat as well as a viking centre, boat trips and a splendid seaview golf course.

Liked Location, close to Largs and in a nice peaceful countryside setting.
Pitches, large and with flexibility, so able to pitch next to friends.
Plenty of availability of electric hook up pitches.
Toilets / showers - reasonably clean, especially if early to use / not after lots of people. But temporary / portacabin-style and not much ventilation in showers or room to get changed with dry floor (no shower curtains so floor easily wet).
Friendly welcome, relaxed hosts, accommodated request to store bikes in barn (weather wasn’t great and would have had to keep in tents otherwise).
Didn’t have opportunity to try catering van but looked promising (recommend being able to take card payments in future).
Working farm - lots of points of interest for young children.
Picnic tables - was really useful for eating at as a group, and for playing card games etc at (during the limited times it stopped raining!).

Disliked Free roaming animals means free roaming poo (watch your step!) but was cleaned up at least once while we were there.
Lack of communal covered space, I.e., been at sites before with camping lounge / kitchen for during bad weather (and weather was bad!).
Car park - bit of a slog from where we pitched carrying all our stuff in the rain… prefer being able to park next to pitch.
Showers could benefit from shower curtains - or a bit more space to change with dry flooring.

Liked What an amazing location and fabulous facilities. The food van run by Marcus was delicious.

Disliked Folk still out laughing and chatting close to midnight when Ts&Cs say to keep it down after 10pm. Don’t mind folk enjoying the weather but keep it down. Not the fault of the site.

Liked What a beautiful little gem of a place! I loved everything about it. Hidden in a wee Glen, not far from a bustling Largs, this location is just stunning. The peace, the beautiful animals, the perfect grass to pitch on, the snack bar, the showers, the great loos, the wonderful atmosphere, the camaraderie of other residents and the lovely hosts gave me some beautiful memories, eventhough it was only just one night. Any questions i had , the hosts were there to help. All the kids were having an amazing time. Great experience for them.
We were blessed with great weather but was windy during the night. Wifi was a bit iffy but didnt bother me as it was so nice not to have the distraction. Truly was the best camping experience I've had for years. There are cracking beaches not far away, great for a morning dip! Loved it! Thoroughly recommend!

Disliked Nothing I didn't like! Will definitely be back.

Liked The location near Largs (not walkable - 3 miles away by road)
Great clean loos and showers for campervans on the field across the road for the main site
Food wagon in the evenings
No WiFi or phone data signal

Disliked The electric pitches in the levelled field are small and top of each other so can hear each other farting! Yes that close!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review and sorry you felt the pitches were too close. You were staying the busiest weekend we have had so far!

If you had come to see me I would happily have given you out a code for the WiFi as we are in a valley we do struggle for mobile service.

I have to disagree and say that most people happily walk into Largs from our site as although no foot path as such it is a relatively quiet country road.

Apart from these issues I do hope you enjoyed your stay with us!

Best wishes

Liked The location was very peaceful and tranquil, we were a short drive from Largs which had plenty to do. The owners were fantastic, they went out their way to help us and our boys.

It is a working farm and we really enjoyed that, as there were animals wandering around the campsite during the day which our youngest loved!

Disliked Nothing

Local attractions

Got the urge to flex your golfing arms? As well as the course in Largs, there are several other courses along this stretch of coastline – Royal Troon, Prestwick and Gailes Links courses are all within an hour’s drive. If you’re more into watching sports than thwacking golf balls, aim for Ayr’s racecourse (an hour’s drive away). Sticking a little closer to home, plan a bit of time in Largs – wandering along the promenade, getting into the viking spirit at the Vikingar Centre or having a bit of splash time in the swimming pool. Just outside town (15 minutes’ drive from the site) is Kelburn Castle, a mural-adorned ancient pile whose estate has a waterfall to hike to, a sculpture trail to stroll along and (shhh…) a secret forest to seek out. Looking longingly beyond Largs? Board a ferry from the harbour to the island of Great Cumbrae for bike rides and watersports, or head to Wemyss Bay (20 minutes) for the boat to Bute. Either way, keep eyes out for seals and seabirds lounging along the shoreline.
