Oban holiday park - looking out onto the isle of kerrera and onto mull in the distance.
Oban holiday park from above
Scenic holiday park

  • Scenic site 10 minutes' drive from Oban, with views to Kerrera island
  • Ferries, whisky distillery and horse riding within 10 mins' drive
  • Play area and shop on site; dogs welcome
For some folk, Oban is a jumping-off point for trips to the spectacular Scottish islands; for others, it’s a very handy location simply for sinking into the gentle pace of rural Highlands life while still keeping convenient access to shops and other amenities. Whichever of those groups you fall into, a fine base awaits at Oban Holiday Park, a spacious and peaceful site in Gallanchmore, about 10 minutes’ drive south of the Oban. It’s a scenic spot indeed, with views out over the sea to the island of Kerrera (which you can take a closer look at by boarding a ferry less than a mile away). There are plenty more options for island hopping from the harbour in Oban, whether you’re doing a grand tour or just taking day trips. The town also has a good collection of shops, restaurants and things to do, including a cinema and golf course – not forgetting the option for a stroll along the seafront at sunset, watching the boats bobbing in the harbour. Staying here isn’t all about the islands, of course – there’s a whole heap of things to see on the mainland too, including castles, gardens and a whisky distillery. Activities are plentiful too, with pony trekking and scuba diving close by as well as a good choice of places to go for walks and bike rides. On site, all is nicely convenient too, with a small food shop, chemical disposal and modern toilets and showers; there’s also a play area where the kids can have a good run about. The site is supported by natural water springs, so you'll need to boil any water you intend to consume or drink bottled water instead.

What customers say

This campsite offers beautiful, scenic views near Oban, with many guests commending the lovely scenery and helpful staff. Facilities are clean but some find them dated. While the peaceful vibe and spacious sites are appreciated, many mention uneven, muddy pitches (especially for larger rigs) and water supply issues. Some also noted ongoing construction.

Liked Beautiful view, next to the waterfront.
Can walk up the hills at the back.

Shower is hot enough.

Disliked The road leading to the site is so narrow, driving a motorhome there is a big hazard if there’s incoming traffic. Google map direct us to the road that passes through a housing estate, then up this extremely narrow hilly path. Had the scare of our lives. The route along the coastline is better, take that one instead.

No one at reception, one actually can stay for free after hours.. lol

Electricity surge at night and tripped off the fuse, ended up with no heating second half of night.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nice grassy pitches with lots of space. The campers kitchen with kettle, microwave and toaster was very welcome! Useful to have a freezer for ice packs.

Disliked Having to boil the water! Hopefully the water system will be sorted out soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked For tenting: open field pitch was easy for setup and close to the toilets. WiFi was great - a big deal with teenagers. Surrounded by trees so felt like proper camping, though no “view” to speak of. Staff were very accommodating.

Disliked The lake is about 5 minute walk along a country road and the “beach” is about a 20 meter stretch between two fences. No additional facilities for cooking or sitting (picnic tables, etc).

Liked Overall it was ok.

The kids play area was enjoyed by the kids.

All the other guests were nice and respectful.

Disliked Nothing was terrible, but it wasn’t great either.

The kids play area was good, but the septic tanks are next to it and they stank. There was also dog poo near the play area.

Very limited hot water, and no drinking water.

Ground is uneven in many areas.

Toilets and washing facilities were rarely cleaned.

We didn’t see a member of staff during our stay. No one checks guests in or out. It was crowded as many people staying there told us that they hadn't booked/paid as no one checks. We paid £100 for two nights which seemed pricy given the facilities - or lack of.

Location was ok but not the most inviting or picturesque given the surrounding area. It was our first time in the Highlands and this site didn’t meet exceptions in terms of locality, but the surrounding the areas were beautiful. Nothing nearby and a good drive (though a council estate) to the local town. Lacked views which is a massive shame given the local area.

Liked The view

Disliked The lack of unadulterated water to drink and the need to go and buy bottled water from a supermarket. We would have appreciated advance warning of the matter.

Local attractions

Getting out to see the surroundings? There are lots of lovely walks to be done nearby, or you can hire bikes in Oban (10 minutes’ drive) for scenic cycle rides. Achnalarig Riding Stables (10 minutes) is another option, for pony and horse riding lessons or treks – or you might like to see what’s out at sea by joining a scuba trip from Puffin Dive Centre (five minutes’ walk). Once you’ve viewed Kerrera from your pitch, head up the road (five minutes’ drive) to board a ferry over to the island – there’s a great seven-mile walking trail that runs from the harbour and will show you some of the island’s best bits. For other islands, it’s a 10-minute drive to Oban harbour, where services run to Lismore, Mull, Iona and Coll as well as more far-flung destinations. Back on the mainland, you may like to stop by at Dunstaffnage Castle (20 minutes), the Green Shoots garden (15 minutes) and Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre (35 minutes) – and don't forget a dram at Oban Distillery (10 minutes)…
