  • Wild camping with Glastonbury Tor views in Somerset’s Mendip Hills
  • A 10-minute drive to Wells, and 20 minutes from Glastonbury
  • Wildlife and walks on site; pub a five-minute stroll away
With a spectacular south-facing position on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Croscombe Camping overlooks open countryside and the pretty little village of Croscombe – and you can even glimpse Glastonbury Tor in the distance. This is relaxed and definitely wild camping, so simply turn up and pitch your tent wherever you like in the field. There’s masses of room for couples, families and their dogs (on a lead please), and while campfires and barbecues are allowed, please raise them off the ground to protect the grass. Simple facilities include hot showers and flushable loos. As long as it’s dry you can park next to your tent, and if not, there’s a car park on site. There are no bins though, so please take your rubbish home to recycle. You can get on to country walks right from the campsite, where you might get to see foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits, or bring your bikes and enjoy a cycle ride around quiet country lanes. It’s only a five-minute walk to the nearest pub, The George, which serves Somerset scrumpy cider along with excellent pub food, takeaways and pizza on Saturdays.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The location is beautiful and a short drive into Glastonbury. The views are stunning and you can see Glastonbury Tor as you step outside the Sheppard's Hut.

Inside, although basic, there is everything you need. The bed is very comfortable, there's a table and chairs, even a mirror. It was clean. Despite not having any electrics and being so rural, phone signal was really good. I also felt safe as a solo female traveller which is very important.

Hosts were very accommodating to the fact I checked in later in the evening after watching the sunset from the Tor.

I have rebooked to stay again!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice and simple site with good clean showers and toilets. Friendly owners. Beautiful views across to the Tor in Glastonbury. Reasonably priced.

Disliked: The George Inn shuts at 1800 on a Sunday which was a shame.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful location, had toilets and running water. It was close to locations but still felt like you were in the middle of nowhere.

Disliked: There was a large group of people staying and music playing until early hours of the morning although we couldn't tell if the music was on or off site. I think that came down to the time of booking although the pitch up suggests no large were allowed so this was a bit of shame there there was.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The view from the campsite was fantastic. A very peaceful place with plenty of space to pitch and give everyone room. The George Inn was friendly and food was good.

Disliked: Uneven ground. A large group were making noise and drinking until the early hours, leaving litter in the communal barn area.
The loud chugging sound of a generator used by a permanent
resident (running from 10pm-midnight) ruined the peaceful feel.

Local attractions

Catch the Somerset history vibe with visits to the flamboyant, Gothic-era Wells Cathedral (10 minutes’ drive), and check out the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens too. Glastonbury (20 minutes) has an atmospheric abbey of its own, and loads of quirky little shops selling joss sticks and silver jewellery, while the darker side of local life is revealed on ghostly guided walks of Shepton Mallet Prison (10 minutes). Want to breathe in more of that fresh Somerset air? Scramble up to the top of Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Somerset Levels (30 minutes), where you can spot wading birds on walks and cycles through sleepy villages. For more hardcore exercise, take a climbing course on the limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes). Animatronic dinosaurs, cave tours and mini golf may well keep kids entertained for much of the day at Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes), or you can clamber aboard a steam train on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes) to chug through the countryside. And if you’re holidaying with teens, pray they don’t know about Clarks Village (25 minutes), or they’ll be busy spending your retirement fund in the cut-price designer outlet stores.
