  • Two-acre site on a family-run smallholding in Bishops Lydeard
  • Five minutes' walk from West Somerset Railway steam trains
  • Rural site backed by woodland; two pubs within a few minutes' walk
If you like to arrive in style on your holidays, this is certainly a place where you can do just that… Bishops Lydeard Caravan and Camping Site is one of those rare places where you can ride into town on a steam railway, thanks to the West Somerset Railway station a mere five minutes’ walk away. Those planning to ride the rails at a later point, meanwhile, should be pleased to hear that access in a more conventional manner is also straightforward, as the A358 passes fairly nearby. Either way, this is a rather splendid spot with pitches spread across a two-acre field surrounded by protected woodland just on the edge of the village. It’s all been set up in the grounds of the 18th-century Greenway House, a Grade II-listed building that was once part of the adjoining Sandhill Park estate. It’s now a family-run smallholding, so you’ll share the space with ducks, geese and chickens and there are more farm animals to spot in the surrounding fields. As well as being a top spot for train enthusiasts and those in search of farm stays, this place also has much to offer walkers, cyclists and folk travelling with four-legged companions, thanks to the plethora of pathways in the surrounds. And it’s also rather handy that there are two fine pubs and a microbrewery within a few minutes’ walk… Life on site is pretty simple, with a few amenities set up in the form of portable toilets, water taps, a chemical disposal point and a shower room. Barbecues are permitted and there’s ice pack freezing available to keep provisions cool.

What customers say

This friendly, peaceful campsite is praised for its excellent location, a short walk from the West Somerset Railway, Quantock Brewery, and local village amenities. Pitches are spacious and level in a well-maintained field. Facilities are basic but clean, though some guests felt they could be improved, especially the portable toilets. Welcoming owners and farm animals add charm. Many guests would return.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Owner was very pleasant and booking in was a simple process, location very good with steam trains a short walk away as is a microbrewery with varying pop-up eateries and village is only 5 mins by car away.

Disliked Site toilets are one trailer toilet and several portaloos, showers are on a trailer and very small so difficult to get dressed without getting clothes wet, field is undulating so difficult to get a flat spot for a caravan but fine for a tent

From the manager: Hi Kevin

The shower trailer is standard size it has 4 bays, each has a slightly raised separate dressing area and with a seat and hooks to keep clothes dry. The shower curtain can be pulled back to make the area bigger. We also had a built shower room next door to the trailer which has a bigger shower and area Pedestal hot water sink, Seat and hooks. This is particularly useful if helping children, or if someone has mobility issues. All our showers are supplied with ‘Faith in Nature’ premium complimentary products. The toilet trailer is flushing toilets but we also supply our own clean portaloos as back ups. Again people with mobility issues often like to use these as flat on the ground avoiding any steps. All of these are regularly cleaned daily and serviced.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked A quiet large grass pitch with hook up on a working farm. There was plenty of space, level area, basic facilities - portable shower block, porta loos and toilet disposal unit.
Lots of trees although not many birds.
Most people respectful of noise at night.
Easy walk to Bishops Lydeard railway station and bus stops into Taunton.
Friendly owner on site.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great little campsite tucked away near the West Somerset Railway, Taunton & Bridgewater so lots of places to go visit.
The site was an open field lined on 2 sides with woodland. Chickens & geese roam freely.
We went with electric hookup but you can go non electric hookup.
Basic toilets & showers, kept very clean & the showers had complimentary shower products. Recycling & general waste bins.
Karen was a great site owner. Very welcoming & knowledgeable on local history
We will go again. So peaceful & so tranquil

Disliked Not dislikes but more ideas about a few little kids park rides for younger children & maybe some fire pits for the evening

Local attractions

Start local with a stroll up to the village to browse the farm shop, the Quantock Brewery, the tea rooms and the little rural life museum within Bishops Lydeard Mill. Just outside the village (but certainly worth travelling a mile for) is a smart hotel where you can pick up day passes for the swimming pool, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you need an excuse to book in for some pampering, perhaps a few long walks or bike rides would fit the bill? There are plenty of options in the nearby Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, around the Blackdown Hills AONB (20 minutes’ drive) or over in the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). And one mustn’t forget the coast – the South West Coast Path starts in Minehead (half an hour), and it’s got plenty of beachy activities too. A little inland from Minehead is the splendid Dunster Castle; other fab options for days out nearby might include horse riding (10 minutes from the site) or gentle strolls around Hestercombe House & Gardens (15 minutes).
