Owners' cottage as seen from the main road

  • Simple Somerset pitches by an orchard in the grounds of a family home
  • Burnham-on-Sea five minutes' drive; 25 minutes to Cheddar Gorge
  • Handy stopover for M5 journeys; easy access from the A38
As handy Somerset stopover locations go, this one scores a lot of points. Ivy Cottage Campsite is just off the A38 and just a few minutes' drive from Junction 22 of the M5, so it's in an excellent spot for an overnight stop on a long motorway journey. What’s even better is that this quiet little campsite is just a couple of miles from Burnham-on-Sea, so once you're set up you’ll be able to sneak off for a paddle, a swim or a bit of sunset-watching easily enough. Supermarkets and takeaways are a couple of minutes' drive away on the edge of town, and there's a village pub half a mile away. Burnham-on-Sea has plenty of pubs and other places to eat as well (including fish and chips to take to the beach, of course). This is a fairly simple site in a peaceful setting in the grounds of the owners' cottage. Dog-friendly grass pitches have views of the neighbouring orchard and access to portable toilets (please note there are no showers on site). If you're stopping for longer than one night there's plenty to keep you busy nearby, including coastal walks, shopping trips to Clarks Village and visits to Cheddar Gorge.

What customers say

This simple, quiet orchard campsite, lauded for friendly owners & farm animals. Ideal for short stays, though facilities are basic (one portaloo, no showers). Some reviews note traffic noise & camper issues. A "back to basics gem" with room to improve.

Liked Everything as described and such a lovely warm welcome from the owner. He couldn't do enough for us. Nothing seemed to be a problem and he was kind enough to take me to the local Pharmacy to get dressings for a long standing issue.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Small, personal, friendly owners, nice setting with plenty of shade and tables. Good location for trains and buses.

Disliked Inconsiderate other campers (I think the same ones referred to in the previous review). They ran a diesel generator all day and I had to eventually get up at 1130pm to ask them to turn their TV down. They also had no control over their dog which would come over and pick up my stuff. It's nice in theory not to have rules, but not when the site then attracts people who think it's OK to behave like this. No showers we knew about, but had assumed there would be a washbasin at least

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked The cold water tap

Disliked Right next to busy main road. Very old portaloo with not enough blue fluid to flush. Campsite scruffy with loads of old sheds/wood/furniture around. It’s clearly somebody’s back garden. The grass was mown but not raked up and some areas had builders rubble underneath. As a no-alternative stop-off, fine as a last resort but lack of showers as well made the whole stay feel really grotty. One group had two tents, three vans and a gazebo plus what looked like three toilet tents. It looks nothing like the photos.

From the manager: Hi , thanks for your comment , they have been noted . I am aware there is a little traffic noise due to the campsite location. You were informed the portable toilet needs the handle to flush at least 6 times . Sorry it’s old looking but still works fine . The grass was cut but not picked up to which I’m very sorry about . Please don’t book again as I find your comments rude and not nessasery
