  • Peaceful site at the foot of the Quantock Hills
  • Three fishing lakes on site
  • A base for Cheddar, Glastonbury and the Exmoor and Somerset coast
Solo sorts, families, couples and most of all anglers… come and get sorted at serene and scenic Burton Springs, for a super stay in a Somerset wildlife haven. This peaceful place is at the foot of the Quantock Hills and a nifty base for getting out around the Quantocks, the west Somerset and Exmoor coastline, and smashing Somerset settings like Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Abbey, both under 20 miles away. And if your group are fisherfolk? Cast off on site in the three handsome and well-stocked lakes: there's one each of coarse fishing, carp fishing and cat fishing to keep all angling enthusiasts hooked. Please note that fishing is subject to additional charges and must be booked in advance. (Non-fisherfolk have plenty of wildlife to see, walks to wander and quiet spots in which to hide with a book or three.) Burton Springs is well kept all round by its friendly family team, who've added a spankingly clean shower and washroom as well as a washing-up area for guests' use. There's also a games room for all ages, with table football and a dartboard, a selection of board games, DVDs and reading material, and a small play area in the pitching field with a pirate ship, climbing walls, slides and a basket swing. Food and drinks are available to buy in the site shop.

What customers say

This well-kept, friendly campsite boasts excellent, clean facilities, including private shower/toilet cubicles. Guests enjoyed the peaceful vibe, beautiful lakes, playground, and games room. Dog-friendly areas and helpful owners/staff were a hit. Minor building noise and pitch privacy concerns were noted by a few.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked Good facilities generally. Really cool little honesty shop selling great honey they make on the farm.

Disliked As we were having our breakfast, the owner came up and told us that there would be an extra £20 charge for charging our EV overnight. It was plugged in via a 13-amp plug on a mobile mains unit, and only actually pulled around 7 amps to add ~30 miles of range overnight, so that we had some wriggle room to get home. This is a commonly done thing and there was nothing in any of the documents to say that this was not permitted. I stood in front of him and worked out that even at 69p per kWh, which is over twice the UK average and about what one might pay at motorway services, it would have cost £8.40. His response was "Let's call it a tenner then". In reality, he almost certainly made a profit on the £5 I had already spent. The conversation was loud and embarrassing for my partner, so I paid up.

All in all, I paid for an electric pitch, I paid £5 to connect the electricity, then I had to pay an unmentioned £10 charge for actually using it.

It is a shame because we were looking forward to going back, but I don't dare drive past it in future in case the guy helps himself to any more of my cash.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and especially for mentioning the charging of your EV car via the 16amp hook up box on each pitch which is what you use to plug domestic appliances in via a 13amp cable. ie kettle, phone charging, cooking etc.
Firstly, by your own calculations you used "£8.40" you think, this is still £3.40 over the £5 paid, so I can only assume that you would of expected us to pay that additional money for you to charge your car. Whilst talking to you in the morning, you where boiling a kettle, cooking bacon on an electric cooker and toasting bread. All in addition to charging your phones and on top of that plugging your car in to charge. Unsurprising we had to come out at 5.30am, as the electric had tripped due to the over loading, which was caused by you. Had you of asked about EV car charging we would of pointed out the ACTUAL charger to you. I fear your partner was more embarrassed by the clearly cheeky actions of trying to sneak in a car charge, knowing that this wasn't allowed.

We very clearly have an EV charger onsite for guests to use and pay for their car charging, also this has the correct amps for car charging, so that it doesn't over load the electrics. We ourselves own a 40kw zoe, fully electric car, so understand how much it costs to charge cars.
We are a micro site, owned by husband and wife, we are not part of a massive chain or group and get NO help with outgoings. As you can only image our expense has tripled over the past year and we operate on the minimum or margins.
We are on commercial electric rate, which is A LOT MORE than domestic.

Would highly recommend to anyone

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked The dog field was very useful, the site was clean and tidy and the washing facilities were some of the best we have used on a campsite.

Disliked It didn't affect us but the house being built looks like it will overlook the entire camping field which would put us off staying again.

From the manager: Hi
Thank you for your review and we try really hard to make sure that all the facilities are clean, as there is no worse!
It is our house and it is now finished, The bedrooms are on the top, so we really wont be looking over everyone. This is our forever home, as we wont be a campsite forever. One day we will return the fields back to grazing for animals.

Positive stay. Would return.

Local attractions

Burton Springs' closest chunk of coast is at Burnham-On-Sea about seven and a half miles away. Seaside resort Weston-super-Mare is a few miles further along the coast from Burnham; for the Exmoor coastline, stretches of shoreline and sand like Kilve, Dunster, Minehead and Porlock are a short drive in the other direction. The South West Coast Path, Britain's longest long-distance path, starts from Minehead on its epic 630 miles via the coasts of Devon and Cornwall to finish up at Poole Harbour in Dorset. If this is a tad too much, other hikes around the region include the Quantock Hills, England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; Brean Down, a Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the National Trust, and the Mendip Hills, also an AONB and home to splendidly spectacular Cheddar Gorge. The Burton team also reckons guests should take a look at the small wildlife and adventure park Tropiquaria, the National Trust's Dunster Castle and Fyne Court, the Bakelite Museum at Wilton, the RSPB reserve at Greylake, and the rides and attractions of Brean Leisure Park. Paintballing is available at Cannington Park, nearby at Bridgwater.
