Park Farm: View from the adjoining field

General

  • Comfortable shepherd's hut in a quiet location on a small farm
  • On the edge of Milton Abbas, 30 minutes' drive from Poole Harbour
  • Self-contained unit with a shower room, kitchenette and gas barbecue

Park Farm in Dorset has a well-built shepherd's hut in a green agricultural landscape on the edge of the village of Milton Abbas. This well-maintained hut, which dates back to the 1920s, has been restored over the years to become the comfy unit it is today.

The self-contained accommodation here is furnished with essentials like a sleeping area, a kitchenette and a separate shower room. There's also a logburning stove to keep you toasty in the evening, plus a gas-fired barbecue where you can cook out of doors on a covered decking area.

In adjoining fields you'll see horses and sheep quietly grazing, while a short stroll away there's a woodland at the bottom of the fields for quiet tours of the grounds. All of this can be admired from the spacious outdoor decking area, a top spot for relaxing with a cup of tea and admiring far-reaching views, which on clear days extend all the way down to Poole Harbour (30 minutes' drive) and the Isle of Wight.

Park Farm is about three quarters of a mile from The Hambro Arms, the village pub. Milton Abbas also has a post office and a farm shop for supplies.

The shepherds hut is idyllic; in the middle of nowhere with fantastic views down on fields with grazing sheep and horses. You can walk straight from the hut right down into acres of forest.

We very much enjoyed the barbecue on the deck and the kitchen was well equipped with tools.

We also slept very well, found the mattress very comfortable and as it is so quiet we slept very soundly indeed.

The shower had good pressure and was lovely and hot. The eco toilet was certainly an experience but was part of the adventure.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately there was construction work taking place on the farm during the majority of our stay and we were not advised at time of booking or check-in. It appeared that a new dwelling was being constructed and the road leading up to the main road was dug up in order from early in the morning to access pipes. This road was only wide enough for a single vehicle to pass.

Therefore, when we attempted to leave the farm on at least two of the days, we had to politely ask the builders whether we could be let out. The builder who was operating the digger was quite rude and only begrudgingly moved it, saying that we should have parked our vehicle past the road works. Unfortunately, given that we had no knowledge that the building work was taking place and the shepherds hut is so far down the track that we didn’t have visibility of the road, we wouldn’t have known to do this.

This spoilt what would have been an absolutely lovely stay. It made us feel quite awkward coming and going and meant that we spent more time away from the lovely shepherds hut so that we didn’t have to deal with the builders. On our last day we even made the decision to leave at 7:30 so that we would be able to get out before any builders had arrived.

A friendly text from the host advising us of building works or suggesting we move our vehicle when he/his family did, would have been much appreciated.

Excellent location for peace and quiet and if you are a lover of wildlife this is definitely the place to stay.

The Shepherds hut has everything you need for your stay but if you did need any help with anything Tony (Owner), Nick (Owners Son) and family are more than happy to help with anything.

The Hut itself is very cosy especially if you use the fire, the bed is very comfy and does have electricity plugs for charging your phone and boiling the kettle.

The kitchenette is well equipped with Fridge, Microwave, Toaster, cutlery and bbq tools.
The BBQ is well maintained and clean and under cover so if you do have any rain you are still able to cook we did have a little rain but passed over fairly quickly.

The Shower room is well equipped comes with soaps and hand gel, Towels are also included and the dry toilet is easy enough to use.

Wood is included for the fire inside the hut and you can purchase Fire Pit wood and kindling from Tony for a reasonable price.

There is a outside table and two chairs for eating and two chairs inside the hut for sitting on also.

The view from the hut is lovely you can see the horses and sheep and on a good day you can see clear across to the isle of wight.

There is a 100 acre wood to explore for lovely walks with a great range of birds from Yellowhammers and woodpeckers, there were a few rare birds that we havent seen before.

We heard the owls calling most nights and we even heard a Nightjar churring, the bats fly over head every evening and swallows in the field to the left i could go on about how much wildlife is here there is also Deer and it is soooo peaceful lots of raptors as well

Also should you need it there is 4g reception.

In our opinion if you want a peaceful tranquil relaxing holiday this is the place to stay.

We will be visiting again and the good thing also is that you can visit in any weather and still be cosy we cant recommend this place enough.

Thank you again to Tony and his family we had a wonderful stay.

We will see you all again Paul and Sam
