Shilvington Barn: A view to wake up too!!

General

  • Peaceful Dorset site on a family farm, with stunning rural/sea views
  • A 15-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast and Dorchester
  • Homemade burgers and local produce for sale; firepits for hire

What a handy location this is for a rural Dorset holiday – Shilvington Barn campsite is above the tiny hamlet of Coryates, less than 20 minutes’ drive from Dorchester, Weymouth and the gorgeous Jurassic Coast.

This is a family-run working farm, with the site cows always somewhere nearby, and often more animals lurking in the surrounding hedgerows (deer, buzzards, rabbits and foxes can often be seen around the place). If you fancy getting to know some of the residents, book an alpaca experience on site.

As well as being handy for getting out and about, this location is also rather stunning – the grass pitches have 360-degree views out over the Dorset countryside to Chesil Beach and the sea beyond, and often take in stunning sunrises/sunsets over the surrounding hills too. Lots of circular walking routes can be followed nearby, including the ramble to Hardy’s Monument two miles away.

Life on site is pretty relaxed, with plenty of space for kids and dogs to stretch their legs, and access to a basic washing-up area and communal portable showers and portaloos. Bring along a barbecue or hire a firepit on site and you can cook up burgers from the farm and other local produce that can be bought on site. You can also source pints at a couple of local pubs two and a half miles away.

Location, facilities and peace and quiet.
This was our second visit and equally as good as the first.
The location is incredible with panoramic views from any part of the site.
The facilities are good especially the wonderful showers.
And the peace and quiet (if you discount the cattle and sheep) is glorious.
Hopefully it will ‘pop up’ again next year!

After arriving home from Shilvington camp site I am already getting more family members together to bring back!
I am in love with this place, it was the perfect first time camping experience.
Incredible views surround the campsite with the most stunning sunset. We had lots of space to set up. There are portaloos which are immaculate and were absolutely fine for us but the owners have said they will be updating these toilets. I liked that the toilets were separated for men and women. They also have very well built hot showers, which are very roomy and a must.
Washing up area again is made really well and a great facility to have.
We rented a firepit which is also a great extra and added to the experience. You can order food from the farm, which we did and we had bacon and burgers which were again a must do and wish we had got more it's delicious.
Lots to visit in the area such as Weymouth beach, Abbotsbury and the hill views are
incredible! Our favourite was hive beach in Bridport, we stopped for a Halibut lunch at Hive beach Cafe which boasts great views of the coast, I highly recommend the halibut and this lovely place to eat. There are lots of costal walks. We wanted to visit the Golden cap but unfortunately ran out of time as we only had the weekend and we just wanted to get back to the campsite to enjoy the views there. We cooked our food ordered from the farm on our BBQ, lit the firepit and watched the incredible sunset all with the soft sounds from the cows and sheep in the background. What more could you ask for! And last but not least a massive Thank You to the family who run this campsite and more...You made our stay incredible! such kind, caring people. A big Thank You to your daughter Georgina who brought our meat and firepit to us she was so friendly and helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. Can't wait to come back and was so lovely to meet you!

Local attractions

To the Dorset coast first? The famed 18-mile Chesil Beach is about 15 minutes’ drive away, with plenty of scope for walks or days of sea fishing. Sailing and surfing types should set off instead for Portland Harbour (20 minutes’ drive), and paddleboarders, kayakers and swimmers alike can all get a close-up view of Durdle Door by setting off from its adjacent beach or Lulworth Cove (35 minutes). Proper sand-based family fun, meanwhile, can be had in Weymouth (20 minutes), which is also home to the excellent Sea Life Centre.

Of course, Dorset’s not all about the coast, and there are also some great days out to be had around Dorchester (15 minutes), perhaps visiting the brewery, the dinosaur museum or the teddy bear museum, or setting off to explore Sculpture by the Lakes (25 minuntes).

And if you’d like to include animal viewings on your schedule, plan some time at Abbotsbury Swannery and Subtropical Gardens (15 minutes) or Kingston Maurward Gardens & Animal Park (20 minutes).

Must see

  • Abbotsbury Swannery (5.6 kilometers)
  • Weymouth Sea Life Park and Marine Sanctuary (7.7 kilometers)
  • Radipole Lake Nature Reserve (8.0 kilometers)
