  • Peaceful Dorset site on a family farm, with stunning rural/sea views
  • A 15-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast and Dorchester
  • Homemade burgers and local produce for sale; firepits for hire
What a handy location this is for a rural Dorset holiday – Shilvington Barn campsite is above the tiny hamlet of Coryates, less than 20 minutes’ drive from Dorchester, Weymouth and the gorgeous Jurassic Coast. This is a family-run working farm, with the site cows always somewhere nearby, and often more animals lurking in the surrounding hedgerows (deer, buzzards, rabbits and foxes can often be seen around the place). If you fancy getting to know some of the residents, book an alpaca experience on site. As well as being handy for getting out and about, this location is also rather stunning – the grass pitches have 360-degree views out over the Dorset countryside to Chesil Beach and the sea beyond, and often take in stunning sunrises/sunsets over the surrounding hills too. Lots of circular walking routes can be followed nearby, including the ramble to Hardy’s Monument two miles away. Life on site is pretty relaxed, with plenty of space for kids and dogs to stretch their legs, and access to a basic washing-up area and communal portable showers and portable toilets. Bring along a barbecue or hire a firepit on site and you can cook up burgers from the farm and other local produce that can be bought on site. You can also source pints at a couple of local pubs two and a half miles away.

Local attractions

To the Dorset coast first? The famed 18-mile Chesil Beach is about 15 minutes’ drive away, with plenty of scope for walks or days of sea fishing. Sailing and surfing types should set off instead for Portland Harbour (20 minutes’ drive), and paddleboarders, kayakers and swimmers alike can all get a close-up view of Durdle Door by setting off from its adjacent beach or Lulworth Cove (35 minutes). Proper sand-based family fun, meanwhile, can be had in Weymouth (20 minutes), which is also home to the excellent Sea Life Centre. Of course, Dorset’s not all about the coast, and there are also some great days out to be had around Dorchester (15 minutes), perhaps visiting the brewery, the dinosaur museum or the teddy bear museum, or setting off to explore Sculpture by the Lakes (25 minuntes). And if you’d like to include animal viewings on your schedule, plan some time at Abbotsbury Swannery and Subtropical Gardens (15 minutes) or Kingston Maurward Gardens & Animal Park (20 minutes).

Bell tent

Liked: Bell tent was lovely and spacious, as a first experience for my little boy, he loved it! Beautiful views, tranquil and good for the soul environment. Annabel was lovely and very welcoming.

Disliked: The only dislike is people pitching very close to you which didn’t make it a very peaceful experience.

Bell tent

Liked: Nice views, bell tent was lovely. spacious pitches.

Disliked: We had a disposable barbeque and struggled to find anything to lift it of the ground to save the grass. other sites have some brick piles around to use for this purpose maybe it would be a good idea as i noticed a few people were having the same issue.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Wonderful remote location with spectacular views of almost 360 degrees. View of Chesil Beach, sea and lush farmland. Just a few sheep in the field next door bleeping away.
Long drop compost toilets clean and well managed. Superb showers. Rustic but very hot and cleverly designed. Delightful. Pleasant sink area for pots. Very spacious site. We loved everything.
