  • Family-run park in the village of Wool, five miles from the coast
  • Under two miles from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
  • Five minutes' walk from train station, bus stops, pubs and shops
If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel. Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out. Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance. Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials. If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry. The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Although we were disappointed that you failed to see any of the positive attributes of our site that almost all of our other guests consistently experience during their stays, we’re glad that you are giving us this opportunity to reiterate the importance of choosing a suitable pitch, checking your booking details and reading site Terms and Conditions before booking your stay.

Your booking was for 2 adults in a small campervan. Despite there being cheaper, more suitable pitches available, you chose to book a 169m2 extra large grass pitch - the most expensive pitch type we offer, intended for guests who are happy to pay that little bit more for the extra space. On your arrival to site, you proceeded to put up a rather large tent next to your campervan, even though you failed to mention or include this on your booking. We got the impression that this was your intention all along and the reason why you booked the extra large pitch in the first instance. Our pricing structure is very transparent and clearly states that gazebos, awnings and/or pup tents are not included in any of our pitch prices but when our warden pointed this out and asked you to pay for yours, you didn’t take too kindly to his request, claiming that no other site has ever charged you extra for the addition of a gazebo/tent, something we find very hard to believe.

We do not feel your review is a true reflection of our site. Our regular reviews speak for themselves and even though we don’t feel that we need to justify our prices, we do believe it compares extremely well to other similar sites in our area.

Whoever you book your next stay with, may we suggest checking the details of your booking and reading the terms and conditions of your stay beforehand to avoid any disappointment.

Liked We are new to caravanning and this was only our second trip, so we were really grateful for the owners’ help.

They kindly unhitched our caravan and positioned it perfectly on our pitch, making sure it was level before leaving us to settle in.

Although we were only booked for two nights due to work commitments, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to return for a longer period next time. The site itself was very clean, well looked after, and had a welcoming atmosphere.

We would definitely recommend this site to others – especially for anyone new to caravanning, as the support and friendliness made our experience so much easier and more enjoyable.

Even the dogs enjoyed them selves with the walks along the river

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review, Brenda. We're pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to welcoming you back again soon. :)

As a note for next time, and for anyone with larger motorhomes, it isn't always necessary to book an extra large pitch if you have a larger motorhome. We would recommend giving us a call before booking to discuss your setup, pitch suitability and availability.

Local attractions

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions. Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out. Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
