  • Quiet and simple family-run site a 15-minute drive from Weymouth
  • A 15-minute drive from Chesil beach and 20 from Dorchester
  • Half an hour's drive from Lulworth Cove and Monkey World
Busy days out and peaceful times back at Buckland Campsite: that’s the order of the day at this rural Dorset spot, a 15-minute drive from the seaside harbour town of Weymouth. You'll stay on the kind of field you want to run through, arms outstretched, pretending to be an aeroplane. And why not? You’re on holiday… It's all nicely simple here, with basic but spick and span washrooms with hot showers, and a washing-up area for pots and pans. Barbecues and fires are fine, but so as not to harm the lush wide field the owners ask that you borrow some bricks from the fire points before you start sizzling your sausages. It’s a five-minute drive to a pub with food; for supermarkets, Weymouth is your closet bet. Not that shopping’s the only thing going on here… Weymouth's a grand town with a posh Georgian seafront, a sandy bay and a fine spread of stuff to see and do: you could meet the stingrays, turtles and sharks at the SEA Life Adventure Park, explore the Victorian fort in the harbour and spot rare birds at the RSPB reserves at Radipole Lake and Lodmoor.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Friendly welcome, lovely bit of the world to visit, some super tuneful cows to wake up to in the morning, good facilities. It was very quiet, which may have been down to the no campfires rule (not the campsite rule, I believe this was the whole of Weymouth that had bbq's and fires banned). Nothing to do but go to bed with the sun! Huge pitches. Relaxed.

Disliked I prefer more of a wild camping experience, whereas this is a site with set pitches and electric hookup. I don't know how I missed this in the site description as our booking was for non-electric. The site is very exposed so keep an eye on the wind predictions as tents were coming down with gusts of 35mph and above. Bring windbreaks! People with a couple of windbreaks seemed to be faring better. Our pitch was absolutely littered with cigarette butts, which was pretty disgusting. Other campers, eh.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely smaller camp site - such helpful family run workers. Lots of tips where to visit. Always cleaning and checking everything is ok with toilets and showers. Helped fix tents in the storms and was really friendly. Would just prefer it if the showers could be turned down as a little too hot. Especially in this heat.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked This almost NEVER happens but I loved everything! We had our first ever camping trip to Buckland Campsite, and after a nearly four and a half drive James helped us complete beginners put our tent up, explaining it all as he went. He is a complete and utter asset to the team. The place is clean, it’s tidy, the toilets and showers are SPOTLESS and they were my main worry. The size of the site is perfect, not too big, nothing is too far away. The little farm shop was brilliant, reasonably priced and stocked with any essentials we forgot or just fancied. The food trucks on some evening were a great addition. The kids play park is great, again not too far so they can go in alone and we could see them playing.
I could quite literally go on and on about how amazing it is, but truly, try it yourself because you WILL NOT be disappointed!

Lovely site but the toilets and showers are small and grubby.

Liked Liked

Lovely campsite that’s not too big, with a great range of facilities including a park, small shop, laundry room, communal freezer and games room. The staff were friendly, and the washing-up area was good. It’s also in a brilliant location, only around 10 minutes from Weymouth seafront. Overall, we really liked the site and the atmosphere.

Disliked Disliked

The toilet and shower facilities are the main downside. They’re basically like posh portaloos that have been plumbed in. The toilets are very small, smell of urine and feel quite grotty. We stayed for four nights and, although the cleaning van came every day, it didn’t seem like they were properly cleaned — more like bleach was put down the toilets and they were given a quick wipe.

The floors were particularly dirty in the corners and around the toilets, and the walls looked like they needed a good clean. The basins are tiny and positioned quite high, which makes them difficult for children and awkward for washing your face. It’s also unpleasant being less than a metre away from someone using the toilet while you’re trying to brush your teeth.

There are individual toilets available too, but these were equally small and grubby. The showers were similar — small, grotty and with a noticeable smell of mould.

It’s such a shame because the campsite itself is lovely. For us, it would genuinely be a 10/10 if they built a proper toilet and shower block. The facilities are the one thing really letting this otherwise great campsite down.

Liked Great location for Weymouth. Staff were friendly when on site, plenty of showers and toilets. Great for kids

Disliked Still quiet a lot of noise after 10pm, quiet time seem to start at 11:30pm for people around us and finish around 6:30am. No one on site checking to see if quiet time adhered too.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked It is a small campsite, Pretty quiet and felt very safe. It was not overcrowded and there was plenty of space between pitches. The playground was small but adequate and the indoor games room was an unexpected surprise, not amazing but the kids liked it. The campsite is flat, pretty open with a hedge around the outside. There were plenty of toilets and showers all in a good condition. Cleaners came everyday to the facilities. Lots of sinks for washing up meant no queuing in the evening. Electric hook up was good and right next to the tents. Fire pits are allowed but we did not use ours due to the current drought and wild fires.

Disliked There were bugs in the toilets and showers which were made worse by leaving the doors open at night. The shop had a variety of things but could be more stocked and food vans could visit more than twice a week. The games room could be freshened but to be honest I’d rather the kids enjoyed the outdoors. All these things did not take away from a nice campsite.

Liked The welcome on arrival, the information provided by the young man. Very informative and helped me select a pitch that was right for my family.
Excellent immaculate facilities. Always clean, washing up area had bowls, washing liquid etc. The pitches were a great size and the campsite was silent by 2230 hrs as per the rules. A Pizza truck came whilst we were there and it was amazing. We were gutted we were going home on Saturday morning as there was another food truck due that night.
The shop on site had everything in it for a reasonable price. Will definately stay again!

Disliked There wasn’t anything I disliked

Liked Secluded location and reasonably quiet. Clean dishwasher area with provided soap and bowls which is a refreshing change from the norm. Hand driers in the toilets were awesome, however side effect of this was you could hear them from the other side of the campsite at midnight. Lovely big pitches, great park and beautiful views.

Disliked Lights on the pitches were a bit bright if you're in a tent, showers were very hot which was great for me but no way to turn them down for the little ones and a squidgy of some sort for the floor would have been helpful for drying the floor for getting dressed after.

Local attractions

After a wander round Weymouth, make for Chesil Beach (20 minutes' drive), a narrow and wild spit of land that’s more like an airstrip. From here, hike the South West Coast Path down to Portland Bill and its lighthouse; you’ll bag sights of half a dozen castles and forts along the way. Alternatively, go east around the coast for about half an hour, taking in Lulworth Castle then dipping down to the blue waters, white pebble beach and wacky rock formations of Lulworth Cove, a prime spot for rockpooling as well as filling up the photo album. If it’s windsurfing, kayaking round the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast or paddleboarding you're seeking, Weymouth has a good handful of hire shops and schools, with more round the coast at Charmouth (40 minutes). The beach there is a brill spot to get the kids fossil hunting; head into nearby Lyme Regis (45 minutes) to learn about the billion years of history that created the coast and to see some fab fossil treasures. There’s more history to be had at Dorchester a 20-minute drive away, from a Roman amphitheatre to a Neolithic henge and an Iron Age fort. To meet your ancestors (in a manner of speaking) go see the antics at Monkey World, half an hour from the site, or monkey about yourself on the slides, flumes and chutes of Splashdown Waterpark, an hour away in Poole.
