  • Wild camping site on an outdoor activity centre five miles from Poole
  • A 10-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Activities on site including archery, mountain biking and axe throwing
From pottering about Poole and scoping out the Jurassic Coast to crossbow shooting, big tree climbing and mountain biking on site, you’ll want to get everyone on deck for a break at Adventure Pirate, five miles from Poole. This Dorset site is wild camping galore and you’ll really be able to muck in, as it’s attached to an activity centre that runs a bucket load of outdoor activities. You’ll need to roll up with all your equipment here (tents or bivvies and nibbles and drinks included), as there are no facilities other than a couple of composting toilets, a single basic shower, a drinking water tap, a washing-up station and some rubbish bins. Once you’ve left your car in the car park and hauled your kit to your chosen pitch in one of the site’s trolleys, you’ll be going fully wild, with ground fires permitted to keep you feeling toasty. There are five acres of safe woodlands on site, so the kids are free to go off and build dens, get muddy or play their go-to games. On top of that, you may very well leave with a new skill under your belt, as the site runs activities including axe throwing, archery, crossbow or air rifle shooting, big tree climbing, survival, foam gun battles and mountain biking. All activities are subject to availability and a fee, and in busier periods, additional sign-up sheets may be displayed (by the way, guests get a 25% discount). For a drink to wash all those activities down or a meal to get your energy levels back on track, Lytchett Minster has a couple of pubs 15 minutes’ walk away or Poole’s got its own delectable dining scene, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Bramble Nook bell tent

Liked: Loved the bell tent. Beds amazingly comfortable, and plenty of private space outdoors to sit and admire the view. Forest school facilities on site and our children made the most of them, with swings, dens and woodland to explore. Solar showers surprisingly warm, although we used them in good weather, and the compost toilets were checked regularly and kept clean. Staff friendly and helpful.
So much to do locally as well.

Disliked: A number of groups had dogs roaming the site and leaving their waste around. Very unpleasant, dogs on leads only would be my request. A couple of very noisy groups playing music and drinking - more enforcement of quiet time on what is a family and child friendly campsite would be appreciated.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Good playground for kids

Disliked: Our air tent was completely gone with needles like spiky plans on the ground.

Arriving around 5pm, there was no glass pitch with fire pit left (at least visible ones) and we chose to put tent on none glass ground near the only fire pit we could find.

Horrible mistake.

It wasn't easily visible at all, but there were so many needles-like plans fallen on the ground, causing air poles on our tent to lose air. I had to wake and pump in every 1.5hr overnight to prevent tent to fall on our heads.

We also got several splinter on our feet while walking on our shoes on. (lucky I had tweezers with me!!)

We had to shorten our stay to 1 night instead of 2 nights we booked without workable tent, but management refused refund saying it's their policy.

Very disappointed to see no sympathy whatsoever from them of our situation, blaming us of our choice made.

Now it's going to cost us a good few hundreds pounds to replace our fairly new family tent & lost £50 of 1 night stay which we couldn't have.

What's a shame.
We are very frequent campers, but surely not returning......

From the manager: Dear Mayumi,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations, and we do sympathise with the frustration of your tent being damaged — especially when camping as a family.

We’re passionate about creating a fun and memorable environment for our guests, and we’re proud that so many campers — especially over the busy bank holiday weekend — had a brilliant time enjoying the woodland setting, the kids’ playground, and the unique atmosphere we’ve worked hard to create.

Regarding fire pits and pitch selection: our team is always onsite and happy to help. If a fire pit isn’t immediately visible or accessible, we’re more than willing to assist in preparing one — especially early in the season when nature can sometimes cover older spots. We do encourage guests to speak to our friendly team on arrival so we can help guide them to a pitch that best suits their needs.

While we do follow our booking policies, it’s never our intention to come across as unsympathetic. We’re truly sorry that this impacted your stay, and although this experience wasn’t what you hoped for, we do wish you many happy camping adventures ahead.

Warm regards,
The Adventure Pirate Team

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Being in the woods and having a camp fire.

Disliked: I should have read site information, but didn't like not being able to unload my car near where I decided to pitch. As a lady of certain years I found it hard dragging the cart to my pitch.

Local attractions

Activities aren't limited to the site – and that’s for certain at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (five minutes’ drive). As well as bringing together a farm fantasy with interactive animal activities, this site has indoor and outdoor play areas and woodland trails and a maze (perhaps one of the only places you’ll want to get lost on purpose). Local beaches could certainly count as a playground of their own too, as beach sports and watersports are available for a chock-a-block day in Bournemouth (25 minutes), a nice contrast to the more austere Victorian parks and gardens, museums and galleries in the town. Then, of course, there’s Poole (10 minutes), with the riveting water rides at Splashdown and the harbour for windsurfing, kayaking and the works. You’ll surely want to take a bite out of the Jurassic Coast too, given that it’s only half an hour’s drive away. Whether it’s a scramble over Dancing Ledge (half an hour), a climb to see Old Harry Rocks (half an hour) or a duck into the old quarry caves at Winspit Quarry (35 minutes), this scenic part of the coast is crammed with beauty spots.
