  • Grass meadow on the outskirts of Broadmayne village in rural Dorset
  • A 25-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast and 10 minutes to Dorchester
  • Lots of safe space for kids to play; 10-minute walk to a pub and shops
Looking to really, really get back to nature? Well, this may be the spot for you. Chalk Meadow is a secluded grass paddock site on the outskirts of the sleepy Dorset village of Broadmayne. Facilities are minimal (just loos and hot showers) and there’s no electricity, but that’s part of its rural charm. Couples, families and well-behaved dogs – all are welcome here, for relaxing country breaks mooching across the fields. And if you want to get out exploring, there’s plenty to do for everybody. You can walk to Osmington White Horse in 45 minutes, and if you’re looking forward to splashing around in the sea with the kids, you’ve got the choice of Chesil (25 minutes), Preston and Ringstead (both 15 minutes) beaches. Get set to spark up the barbecue on site (just remember to bring your own) as it’s an easy 10-minute walk to Broadmayne to stock up on supplies in the convenience stores. Don’t want to cook? No worries – there’s a pub in the village too. For bigger shopping trips, the lively market town of Dorchester (10 minutes' drive) is your best bet, and you’ll probably want to stay a while to poke around its markets, museums and Thomas Hardy's Cottage (15 minutes).

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Wide open space and well kept. So quiet and peaceful. Loo block is very clean and the showers were great. Separate pot wash facilities and plentiful bins too. Jim was superb, showing me around and recommending places to go. Overall a fantastic site for camper vans and as a solo traveller I felt very safe.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: There were multiple fields to choose from which was nice. The showers were also hot with good water pressure.

Disliked: Unfortunately, the toilets are a little overrun with spiders. There are also only 2 female toilets and 2 unisex showers and one washing up station so in the summer you'll be constantly queuing!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Owner was there to welcome me & explain facilities. Stayed a chilly April night. Lovely hot shower was a wonderful welcome in the morning!

Disliked: Did feel slightly vulnerable at night as only 1 other camper on site that night but it was the 1st night of the season.
