  • One of the closest sites to Bournemouth
  • Sociable atmosphere that respects guests' peace and quiet
  • Lots of water-based activities to do nearby
If your destination is Dorset-based, farm yourself out to the friendly folk at St Leonards Farm Caravan & Camping Park, which is a splendid base for exploring Bournemouth, Poole and the New Forest. This is a place that has sparkling clean loos, toasty hot water for showers and washing up, and well marked-out pitches – clearly these farm folk know what campers want. And canine campers are welcome too. If you want to sizzle your own sausages, you can exchange gas cylinders on site and there are two major supermarkets within five minutes’ drive, or two pubs within a mile and a number of nearby restaurants if you’re feeling lazy/thirsty. St Leonards Farm is a sociable but quiet site and has a 'no noise after 11pm' policy – most welcome if you’re getting up at the crack of dawn for some seaside exploring.

Liked: First time camping as a family (1st time camping ever for my partner) we had the best time site is clean tidy and has a lovely big park for children which we stayed right next to after requesting when booking, shower blocks exactly what you need. All other campers there at the time were lovely and polite. 10/10 and great value for money. Near so many useful shops but still felt away and peaceful

Disliked: Lots of flies around in the evening we stayed opposite the play park but I’m aware that can’t be helped by the site owners.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: On arrival we were greeted by a lovely helpful gentleman who guided us where to go and told us about the local amenities (supermarkets are walkable but most amenities are better driven)

The campsite is located in a very quiet part of town, and is a fantastic size of site, having not too many people, meaning not too much noise

It also has a generous set of fields for dogs and kids to get their energy out on and is away from any pitches as to not disturb anyone.

The facilities were the cleanest I've seen at a site (and has a squeegee in the toilet/shower cubicles to help keep the floor dry)

The plots themselves are fantastically spacious and are easily able to pitch up a sizable tent and have space to park the car next to it.

It's also a lovely feature to have an ice cream van every evening and a pizza van.

Disliked: The showers, whilst hot, in the smaller block near the front come out as a trickle (I cannot comment on the larger block) and therefore are fairly futile for water and heating saving as take ages to wash. Would be ideal for much cooler but lots more water to be able to actually wash with.

The plots at the front is not well sheltered from the wind so when such as the two nights here were so much windier than the other plots.

Local attractions

St Leonards Farm is one of the closest sites to Bournemouth, with sandy beaches only seven miles away. There’s loads to do nearby if you’re feeling full of beans – try watersports such as windsurfing, sailing or surfing at Bournemouth’s artificial reef, or get busy with some go-karting, dry slope skiing, golf, fishing or horse-riding in the scenic surrounding countryside. Feeling a bit tired after all that sporty exertion? Take a picnic to nearby Moors Valley Country Park, which has a golf course, cycling routes and outdoor play area, or have a family day out at a plethora of local attractions including Paultons Park, Marwell Zoo, Beaulieu Motor Museum and Wimborne Minster Model Town. Kids will likely enjoy fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast, and if they’re disappointed by not finding a T-rex skeleton right there and then, you can take them along to the Dinosaur Museum at Dorchester, then spoil them with a day out at Adventure Wonderland less than three miles from the park. The site is also an ideal stopover point for the Poole or Portsmouth cross-channel ferries.
