Family-friendly site in south devon

  • Small, friendly site on a working farm five minutes’ drive from Totnes
  • Dartmoor National Park five minutes’ drive; beaches half an hour
  • Jumbo-size pitches with rural views; dog-friendly; pub one mile away
Bag a giant helping of the best of South Devon when you pitch up at Wonton Park Camping, for staying here puts you close to Dartmoor National Park (five minutes’ drive), the indie shops in Totnes (five minutes) and the beach at Slapton Sands (half an hour). Set on a 150-acre working farm – with plenty of sheep around, and lambs in spring – this family-run site has jumbo-sized grass pitches with views over hills and valleys stretching into the distance. It’s easy to get to, as it’s five minutes off the A38, so you don’t need to worry about getting your motorhome stuck in winding Devon lanes. Spotless modern facilities are kept in tip-top condition as they are checked and cleaned regularly; they comprise flushing toilets and spacious showers with hot water on tap and a washing-up sink outside. Families, couples or solo travellers are all very welcome, and there are tons of country walks directly from the pitches to keep everybody – and any holidaying dogs of course – well exercised. Foodwise, you have plenty of options from takeaways to breakfast cafés, traditional pubs to a couple of fine-dining restaurants, all within around 15 minutes’ drive.

What customers say

A new, quiet campsite with spacious sites, great views, and clean facilities. Centrally located for Dartmoor and coast. Friendly hosts. Some experienced wind, noted potential shower queues at peak times. Site access and pitch levelling could be better.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We loved the amazing views, the funny sheep, the cute cows, the hosts were super welcoming, the facilities were clean, modern and well maintained and the ground was perfect for tent pegs. The ground is ever so slightly sloped but we just changed the way our blow up beds were pointing and then it wasn't an issue at all. There is lots of room to play outdoor games, and it easy to find from the road with clear signage. It does say there is no signal but we found the 4G worked fine, apart from a few hours one day there was no signal or 4G but then it suddenly reappeared! We wanted to stay an extra night so the hosts made it happen, for which we are grateful! A lovely place to stay for 4 nights and we definitely will return next time we are in Devon visiting family!

Disliked Nothing!

Liked Spectacular views.

Disliked Pitches are grass and on a slope which made it difficult for us to get level. Toilets and showers were basic and cold. Water was hot though.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Loved this place so much! The most beautiful view. It felt like wild camping but with the convenience of the shower and toilet etc. felt very far away from the other pitches. Easy check in. V peaceful.

Disliked My partner had the hot water run out but I’m not sure why as I went after him and it was fine - perhaps too many showers that morning and it needed some time?

It’s basic so if you’re looking for more than that maybe it’s not for you but it’s LOVELY

Primitive grass tent campsite (two person, small)

Liked Well kept site, easy to find pitch allocation and lots of information around the site about local walks/activities/restaurants. Good facilities which are well kept and friendly owner who came around asking if we wanted to rent a fire pit if we liked.

Disliked Showers were on the colder side the first night but this could have been user error. No faults found! We loved our stay even with the rainy weather.

Local attractions

There’s much to see and do in this corner of South Devon. Kids will be thoroughly spoiled by trips to Woodlands Family Theme Park (20 minutes’ drive) for waterslides, zookeeper talks and falconry displays. More family entertainment can be found on gentle rides and coasters at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (40 minutes). That should be enough to wear everybody out, but keep Splashdown Quaywest waterpark (25 minutes) up your sleeve just in case more entertainment is required. Hardy types can follow hiking trails across Dartmoor National Park (five minutes); it’s an easy ramble up to the scattered stones at Western Beacon from the car park (15 minutes), or you can try the challenging route up to the tors at Ugborough Beacon straight from your pitch (an hour and a half’s walk). Head down to the coast to Slapton Sands, a long spit of shingle beach popular for watersports and swimming, while you can spot egrets and red-necked plovers in Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve (both half an hour’s drive). The sandy stretch at Bantham (35 minutes) has a surf school and kayak rental, and Salcombe (40 minutes) is known for its sailing school and dolphin-spotting cruises.
