General

  • Scenic family-friendly site on the spectacular Dartington Estate
  • Five minutes’ drive from Totnes and a half-hour from Plymouth
  • Wild swimming, zipwire, cinema, arts and crafts, and restaurant

Active types seeking luxury getaways would do well to make a beeline for Camp Dartington, a family-friendly site in the grounds of the spectacular and sprawling Dartington Hall Estate, five minutes’ drive from the Devon market town of Totnes.

The site’s well set up for burning energy, with wild swimming spots and walks to follow (with kingfishers and otters to spy along the way), and Dynamic Adventures on the grounds providing canoeing, zipwiring and archery outlets for guests.

Those of a more artistic bent are looked after too: there are arts and crafts courses (including life drawing, sculpture and spoon carving) to sign up for, gigs and theatre in the Great Hall, and a 14th-century converted barn cinema showing current movies and arthouse films.

The estate’s listed gardens are a pleasant saunter, and visits to the Dartington Dairy for milking experiences and goats milk ice cream come highly recommended. Food’s easily sorted too, with a café serving breakfast, lunch, tea and cake, a restaurant (in the medieval feasting hall) serving lunch and dinner, and local organic vegetables and eggs for sale in the shop a few hundred feet away.

Should Dartington Estate somehow grow tiresome, a 10-minute stroll into the village of Dartington will lead guests to The Shops – a collection of stores selling glassware, jewellery, crafts and local delicacies – and the Devon Gin School.

Lovely and quiet, with a great activity center nearby09/24/2020

It was lovely and quiet on the field, maybe only 4 or 5 other tents there. The local activity center was excellent and there was plenty to do nearby. At night, because we were in a rural area, we enjoyed stargazing.

Just before our trip, we read some reviews that pervious campers were annoyed at the long grass, which cause their shoes and trousers to get wet. Having read that, we took our wellies, and had no problem at all. In fact, even ejoyed it. I would definitely recommend taking wellies with you, as the grass is rather wet in the morning.

    Disliked:

While I appreciate that this mandatory, I personally did not like that the soap dispensers were filled with anti-baterial gel, as they don't wash your hands as effectivly as soap.

Also, there was little hot water in the morning, I found the water quite warm in the morning, but when my partner tried to wash the breakfast items an hour or so later, there was no hot water.

Lovely area, peaceful, close to great walks, bus stop close, local shop close, fridge/freezer free to use, showers hot, great price, free parking, hand sanitisers available

    Disliked:

Grass needs a cut, toilets not always clean (but could partly blame other campers for not cleaning after themselves), communication hit and miss

    Disliked:

Grass needed to be cut. It meant when the grass was wet shoes got soaked (really soaked!) Which is a bit poor. Unable to drive to rent pitch therefore had to carry everything. No staff on site when we arrived (was only just after 5pm so not late)

Liked the size of field and pitch sites. The immediate surrounding provided good access to shops and further activities if required, but not too close to the campsite itself. Facilities clean and well stocked with sanitizer. Pleasant site overall.

    Disliked:

The length of the grass meant that the wrong choice of footwear meant that our feet were soaked within a minute of being on site! Partly a learning curve bit the areas of short grass did show that this need not have been the case.

Quite close to some busy roads so a little noisy, and no on-site presence by staff.

The pitch size was very good and there was plenty of space for our toddler to run around and play. The fridge and freezer were handy. Sink areas clean.

    Disliked:

Toilets and showers could have been cleaner. Showers could do with an Upgrade.

Grass was very long, would have been nicer if it was cut.

The campsite! Such a lovely, clean, calm site. Toilets and showers always clean and plenty of soap, paper towels and hand sanitiser. Washing up area was the same. Nice big fridge. We also loved The Dartington Estate - fantastic walks, cafe and pub coping well with Covid-19 restrictions, good procedures in place.

    Disliked:

The weather!! We had to change pitch due to the wind. The freezer could be bigger but it may be that it needs emptying as lots of old stuff appeared to be in there - not the biggest problem in the world though.
