  • Peaceful family-run farm over 40 acres in west Devon
  • Overlooking Dartmoor a short walk from watersports at Roadford Lake
  • Fresh farm produce for sale, communal campfire and private bathrooms
Communal campfires, farm produce for sale, a menagerie to meet and wide open space all around… you and your small sorts will likely love Devon's Oak Tree Lane. Set on a smallholding over 40 acres of pasture and woodland between Launceston and Okehampton on the Devon/Cornwall border, Oak Tree is a family-run farm with pigs, sheep, goats and ex-battery farm chickens now merrily scratching around outdoors. Young wannabe farmers are welcome to wander much of the farm and help feed the animals during their stay – attention might also be gratefully received by farm cat Snowy… The farm's location is fab, overlooking Dartmoor National Park and within three-quarters of a mile of the biggest watersports lake in the south-west at Roadford Lake; as it's right in the middle of Devon, you can be at either north or south coasts in under an hour. Oak Tree Lane sells its own produce including fresh free-range eggs and a range of pork joints, meat cuts, sausages and bacon from the rare breed free-range pigs. It has a communal campfire for guitar sessions, singalongs or just contemplating the flames with a cuppa or a tipple. Amenities here are in the form of a private bathroom for each group (with toilet, sink and power shower, all cleaned daily), as well as kitchens. These facilities may or may not be contained within your unit, but in any case they'll be just a few steps away. As it's a working farm, Oak Tree Lane can't allow dogs (guide dogs excepted). Please note that the ground on site is undulating and naturally sloped in areas.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked Pretty area.

Disliked Too many rules. Camping is supposed to give us a little freedom. People who run it were a little uptight and not very helpful.

From the manager: Dear Tim,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review, such a shame you left a few points out.
We’re genuinely sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your stay with us. We do, however, feel it’s worth clarifying that our campsite operates with only a couple of very simple expectations — both designed to ensure all guests can enjoy the peaceful, safe, and well-kept environment we work hard to maintain.
The first is that, once guests have unloaded and set up their pitch, vehicles are parked near reception rather than on the pasture itself. This helps preserve the grounds in the pristine condition our visitors appreciate and allows children to play safely and freely.
The second is our recycling system. Guests are welcome either to make use of our award winning, clearly organised recycling facilities or, if preferred, to take unsorted waste home with them. Given the effort we put into maintaining an environmentally conscious site, we don’t feel this is an unreasonable request.
As for asking you not to urinate against the hedge in view of other visitors and children — especially when a private, spotlessly clean bathroom is provided — we would consider that less of a “rule” and more of a basic social courtesy & manners.
We must also confess that, despite our best efforts to make every guest comfortable, control over the British weather still remains frustratingly outside our jurisdiction, we were a little perplexed by this complaint especially as you live in Spain, we’re sure the weather can be much hotter there.
Finally, we were extremely disappointed to discover your parting gift, the condition in which the shower facilities were left after your departure. Leaving human waste in the shower tray created an unpleasant and entirely avoidable health hazard for us to deal with. For that reason, and several others during your stay, we feel it best that we do not accommodate future bookings from you.
We sincerely wish you well in your future travels and hope your next hosts enjoy a rather less eventful experience.
Kind regards

Local attractions

Oak Tree Lane's setting just off the A30 on the Devon/Cornwall border means it's under an hour from the varied terrain of the north and south Devon coasts as well as within easy reach of many top attractions of both counties. Within walking distance at three quarters of a mile is Roadford Lake, the biggest lake for watersports in the south west at over 730 acres. Sailing, windsurfing and kayaking are among the many options on the water here; on land, tackle high ropes, climbing and archery – or take things very easy and settle back to have a cream tea. You can be in Cornwall within 20 minutes, coming in via ancient Launceston a mile from the River Tamar, and driving across the county to Wadebridge and Bodmin Moor, or on to the coast at Tintagel, Boscastle or Port Isaac. The Eden Project is a pleasant drive across Bodmin Moor to St Austell; driving further along Cornwall's south coast will take you to Falmouth, and then onto the Lizard Peninsula on England's south-west tip. Several National Trust sites are within a short drive: have a look at the waterfall of Lydford Gorge, the working watermill Cotehele Mill and the house and estate of 13th-century Buckland Abbey near Yelverton.
