  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon National Landscape, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Top view powered grass and gravel campsite

Liked Quite on site, staff really helpful and lovely, cool barn with good prices for food. Good location to visit the coast

Disliked Pitches aren’t marked well as on faded wet card. Gravel pitch has minimal gravel next to exit gate so it’s noisy, definitely not work the extra money. Not very flat for campers/ caravans. Expensive for the actual pitch states.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The restaurant seemed lovely.

Disliked We booked this site specifically because it is advertised on Pitchup as a “quiet and rural site”. We were looking for a peaceful nature escape and were travelling with our six-month-old baby.

Unfortunately, our pitch was separated from a very busy road only by a hedge, with continuous traffic passing throughout the day. It was therefore far from quiet, and the level of traffic noise completely contradicted the description that influenced our decision to book.

The road may look on a map like a small country lane without central road markings, but in reality it is extremely busy, with a constant flow of traffic. This is something we simply weren’t expecting from a campsite advertised as “quiet and rural”.

When we raised this with the campsite, we were offered another pitch further away, but it was still close enough to the same road that we didn’t feel it would make any meaningful difference to the noise. We were also told we would need to pay extra for the alternative pitch!

We ultimately left without staying because the site simply wasn’t what we had booked or expected based on its description. Despite this, the campsite refused to give us any sort of refund stating they couldn’t refund us because “they would lose the income from the booking”… mind boggling argument.

What is particularly disappointing is that, after looking at other reviews, we found that other guests have mentioned similar issues with the road and traffic noise.

If you’re looking for a genuinely quiet campsite, I would recommend checking the location carefully before booking. “Quiet” is not how we would describe our experience.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some feathered species at Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
