  • Drinks and food available all day; South Hessary Tor 30 minutes’ walk
Fresh Dartmoor air, open moorland and a welcoming pub just a couple of minutes’ stroll from your pitch… does that sound like your kind of camping holiday? You’d better make haste to The Plume of Feathers, set in the village of Princetown in a scenic and peaceful corner of Devon. The site comprises spacious grassy pitches sheltered by trees, with access to hot showers and loos, plus an Elsan disposal point for touring vehicles. There are no electric hook-ups, giving you a great excuse to switch off and simply enjoy your surroundings – and there’s certainly no need to worry about food and drink. The Plume of Feathers pub serves all day, so it’s just the spot for supper after a day on the moors, a relaxed afternoon pint or an evening together without needing to drive. Being slap-bang in the middle of Dartmoor National Park, Princetown is gateway to your exploration of rugged tors, open moorland landscapes and hiking or cycling routes – and wherever you go in the park, keep an eye out for the shaggy Dartmoor ponies that have free run over the landscape.

Local attractions

Keen to abandon the car for a day or two? There’s plenty to keep you amused within walking distance of Princetown. On the outskirts of the village is Dartmoor Prison Museum (15 minutes’ stroll), where you can learn about torture methods, check out artworks created by former inmates and take guided tours of the French and American war cemeteries within the compound. You can also hike up to the rocky crags at South Hessary Tor (20 minutes), or take on the longer walk up to Crazywell Pool (an hour) for views across the high moor. Cyclists might like to pedal up to Burrator Reservoir (45 minutes by bike) for scenic picnics. If you’re happy to venture further afield, kickstart your moorland adventuring with a visit to the National Park Visitor Centre, Postbridge (half an hour’s drive) for inspiration and local information about Dartmoor’s moorland, granite tors and remote trails. Be sure to see the medieval clapper bridge while you’re there. From the popular village of Two Bridges (five minutes) on the West Dart River, have a walk up to mysterious Wistman’s Wood (15 minutes on foot) to see ancient trees draped in moss and lichens.
