Skyburriowe Farm House: View of the field

General

  • Clean, spacious and well-maintained site on a working dairy farm
  • Four miles from Helston with easy access to the Lizard Peninsula
  • Friendly helpful owners; wildlife haven, and homemade cake

Clean, quiet and in a lovely location on a dairy farm close to the Cornish coast are the boxes firmly ticked for Skyburriowe Farm House, a small and very friendly farm site at Garras on the knockout Lizard Peninsula.

Show up here in spring for expanses of bluebells as well as hedgerows filled with common and not so common flowers; in autumn for clifftop walks followed by forays to the local restaurants and pubs (pasties are very warming), and in summer for boat trips, fishing, surfing and looking out for migrating basking sharks and orcas: the nearest beach is only a couple of miles away.

The well-spaced site at Skyburriowe Farm is in a lawned meadow bordered by a line of trees home to a variety of local wildlife, and has free wifi, chemical disposal and amenities (toilets and showers, separate family/disabled room, laundry sinks and a utility room with fridge, freezer and sinks) kept to high standards by owners Vivian and Brenda.

Barbecues are allowed on site, and a food shop, pub and restaurant are within a couple of miles. Whichever foodie option you pick, remember to leave room for some homemade cake, made freshly on site for guests' convenience… you'll probably want to tick that box too.

AA 3 pennants

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

    Friendly and helpful reception.
    Good clean facilities

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but would have liked to have somewhere to put shower gel, shampoo etc in shower rather than using the seat in the dry area of the cubicle.
The recycling bins were all very full

The location was wonderful as it was very close to family, good walks and lovely beaches..
Its not too big for the facilities. Didn't have to queue or wait to use the washing up areas and showers.
    Free freezer and fridges.
Very friendly and love all the local and home made produce available on site.
Large pitches so lots of room for car and windbreaks.
Pitches are well drained so didn't get puddles even during heavy rain.
Loved watching the planes from HMS Culdrose doing their training flights.

    Disliked:

It is a working farm, so there are some noises and smells at certain times but if you are on the second field, they aren't to bad.
Most of the tent pitches are not level and some were very steep. Caravans and motorhomes are able to level out but not so easy in a tent.

Unfortunately, we never got to stay at the farm site as a few days before we had to self isolate as a family member contracted CV-19. We alerted Skyburriowe Farm as soon as we could. They were very understanding and empathetic about our emergency and were able to help with reimbursement of our fees, even though it was not in the cancellation period. We were really looking forward to going and disappointed we couldn't but relieved we were refunded as we did not expect this. Thank you.

Great campsite. Lovely and quiet. Clean toilets with hot showers. Lovely owner. Location is brilliant for access to Cornwall’s beaches; as well as Helston and Falmouth.
Highly recommend accessing from the Helston -> Lizard road rather than from Garras.

    Disliked:

The wifi was a little patchy but that’s to be expected given the location. I would not at all let it put me off.

This site was excellent! It is a 10 min drive away from Helston, Sainsburys, Flambards, Kynace Cove, Cadgwith, and many other little bays. The pitches are massive so never had an issue of feeling cramed in and the EHU was great. The shower block, Utility room, Toilets were very very clean and I enjoyed buying Jam, eggs and fresh veg from the stall situated on site with an honesty box. The evenings were amazing you could sit there with you chosen tipple listening to the Tawny Owl flitting from tree to tree whilst looking up at a sky full of stars due to there being no light pollution and in the morning waking up to the cattle as they had their daily milking duties done. The owners were lovely and very accommodating and never bothered you and believe that a big pitch is better than everyone being crammed together.

the location of the site is easily accessible with plenty of space for awnings ,the grass was kept short, the shower/ washroom facilities were excellent . you can purchase fresh eggs ang veg onsite when available . it is only about a ten minute drive to sainsburys supermarket with a fuel station. the site is well placed to reach a number of beaches. we would definitely recommend.

    Disliked:

it did not bother us but it might others it is a working farm so expect farm smells and noise from aircraft as you are right next to an airfield

Local attractions

To the beach first – this is the Lizard Peninsula after all, and highly scenic sands and cliffs are within easy reach including the very special Kennack Sands four and a half miles from base.

The Lizard is the most popular part of the South West Coast Path and you should hike at least some of it while you're in the region, to see rare plants, coastal birds, and possible marine mammals in the water below. From Helston, hikers can ramble the ten miles to Falmouth via the Helford River, Pendennis Castle and fab River Fal views.

Plenty of popular Cornish attractions are easy to get to from Skyburriowe Farm House, like the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek and Flambards theme park at Helston, the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth and the swish Tate gallery at swish arty town St Ives. The Eden Project near St Austell is about an hour's drive to the north east.

Also near St Austell, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are a splendidly different day out; greenery fans who don't want to drive too far can also mosey around Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, both near Falmouth, or the National Trust's Trengwainton Gardens at Penzance about half an hour's drive from Helston.

Must see

  • National Seal Sanctuary (3.9 kilometers)
  • Flambards (4.6 kilometers)
  • Trebah Garden (8.5 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Penrose Estate: Gunwalloe and Loe Pool (6.4 kilometers)
