  • Family-run farm campsite with access to the North Downs Way
  • Half a mile from Seale; Guildford a 10-minute drive
  • Off-grid site with gas barbecue for communal use
If ‘secluded but certainly not isolated’ sounds like the sort of location that’s just right for you, take a look at Waggoners Campsite at Hampton Estate. This family-run site is surrounded by scenic Surrey countryside, and yet it’s a mere half-mile from the little village of Seale and only a little further from the A31. All is peaceful and pretty at this site – pitches are part of a large field fringed by woodland, and they have stunning views over the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The staff here make an extra effort to create a friendly camping experience, with an emphasis on space, seclusion and escapism. This environmentally conscious spot also tries to minimise its impact on the planet, with green solutions like hand-made compost loos and cold wild woodland showers. The whole place is off grid so it might be a good idea to bring a torch along. Barbecues are permitted for alfresco cooking, and you may be able to make use of the communal gas-fired barbecue. Fancy seeing some more of that lovely countryside? There are direct links to the North Downs Way and Surrey Cycleway trails from here, and several good places to take the dog for a walk nearby too. If the kids aren’t into all that walking, they may like to know that both Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures are a little over half an hour’s drive away.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: As it was my first time solo camping as a young female, it was quite daunting. However, the site was very easy to find, friendly staff and other campers, great facilities and absolutely stunning walks for all levels! I brought my two dogs who loved their stay too, including the free treats. We found some lovely spots for a packed lunch and followed the easy instructions on the welcome boards to find one of the local pubs to walk to for a packet of cheddars and a drink. The fire pits were great, perfect amount of logs included for a long night of warmth and light, complimentary bag of marshmallows too! Everything was very well sign posted/explained too which made things easier, especially being alone! All pitches were level and big too which was nice. Completely off grid which was just lovely, small amount of phone signal so wasn’t completely cut off but such a great way to have a break and reconnect with myself, the dogs and the lovely world we live in! All in all I had a great experience and would definitely stay again!

Disliked: Wish I’d booked for longer!!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The campsite was absolutely lovely, even more charming than the photos! The views are great, the loos/ showers / sinks are in really cute wooden huts with bunting, and are clean and tidy and close to the tents. The campsite host was really friendly and had a lovely dog too! The firepit and wood hire was so convenient (and the firepit came with a grill so you could cook your own food). Would definitely come again!

Disliked: Nothing!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Wonderful site, split levels and a great view. Compost toilets are clean and surprisingly not very smelly. Cutest wash up station, some kind of solar powered hot water would be amazing to get some well washed dishes. Great location perfect for regular weekend sleep outside trips.

Local attractions

If you need a quick way to stretch your legs, start with a stroll on Puttenham Common or take a walk into Seale for a craft shop and tea room – either one will take you about 15 minutes on foot. A little further afield, you could also take a wander around the ruins of Waverley Abbey or the colourful pathways of Tilford Cottage Garden (both 15 minutes’ drive). Getting a glimpse of the past might involve an outing to the Rural Life Living Museum (20 minutes) or going into Guildford (15 minutes) to see the castle and Guildford House before stopping by at Loseley Park on the return journey. None of those quite what you’re in the mood for? How about a round at Farnham Park Golf Course (15 minutes), a day of thrill rides at Thorpe Park or exploring the theme park, zoo and aquarium at Chessington World of Adventures? Both are a little over a half-hour drive away.
