  • Quiet, rural site 25 minutes’ drive from Ashford in Kent
  • The Big Cat Sanctuary 10 minutes’ drive and Leeds Castle 15 minutes
  • A wildlife haven with wildflowers and access to multiple footpaths
Heading for Dover ferries and adventures in Europe? Sticking around to explore Kent? Either way, Far and Away, just outside Headcorn village and 25 minutes’ drive from Ashford, offers a quiet and rural space to spend the night. This pop-up site sits in a field sheltered by mature trees, with easy access to multiple public footpaths through untamed Kent countryside – by the way, the site gets daily visits from red kites and eagles, and on still nights you can hear lions roaring at The Big Cat Sanctuary across the fields. Should you wish to make a trip up to London, there are super-easy train links from Headcorn Station to Charing Cross, with the journey taking about an hour and 20 minutes. Sticking closer to home base, you can go sightseeing in pretty Kent villages like Biddenden (10 minutes’ drive), Tenterden and Cranbrook (both 20 minutes), or dent your bank account with a shopping spree at the Designer Outlet Ashford (half an hour). Facilities-wise, the site has a gas shower and basic loos, but no electricity, so do make sure your packing list includes torches and batteries.

Moonshine ready tent

Liked I picked this site as it had pre erected tents which when camping alone is a life saver. I arrived and called Jayne who immediately came and met me and showed me the tent , and explained a few bits. I was lucky as the day I arrived the Headcorn air show was on and had a fantastic view. Then to chill , I then realised that stupidity had set in and I couldn’t blow my airbed up I messaged Jayne to see if I could rent one and straight away her husband Mark came over took my bed and got it inflated for me what a lifesaver. It’s a dog friendly site and they have the most gorgeous dog who came by to say hi.
This site is back to nature it has two very clean portaloo’s and a shower also two stand pipes for fresh drinking water. It has tables and chairs in a wooden outside room and plenty of pots and pans and gas burner for guests to use. They recycle as well. I loved the fact that apart from around the tents the fields were left wild and the amount of different species of butterflies was amazing. The birds chirping and the sound of the lions roaring from the nearby cat sanctuary was amazing. You will need to bring your food and any extras there is no shops or fridges but if you’ve a car there are some within 4 miles. The ground is uneven when walking but this is due to the rabbits digging so if you’ve poor mobility could be a problem but I just took care when walking. Jayne and Mark are wonderful and friendly hosts and chatted and were so helpful. If like me you really want to get back to nature and submerge yourself in it then this is the place. I felt safe as there is cctv at the main gate and looked after.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked So lovely and secluded.
Owners are very friendly and really helpful.
Loved hearing the lions roar for their tea, from the big cat sanctuary.
Lovely pitch, ground nicely kept, really nice atmosphere from other campers, more like camping in the olden days, a camping ‘community’. Will be returning and will stay longer. I loved that you could hire fire pits and all the wood is provided.

Disliked The amenities are limited. Two portaloos kept in nice condition, one for the glamping tents and one for non glamping. Really for the people staying; more would be better. When I was there we had 12 non glampers and two families with families of 4+ members. Overall around 20+ people and 2 loos. There was problems with them not flushing, not working at times but owners were very quick to sort this out. However, the problem reoccurred.

Again showers, were portashower. 1 per side. Perfectly functional and clean, however having an extra loo and shower on each side would improve the stay.

If you are arriving on foot there are no local shops to buy goods - eg milk etc in easy walking distance, due to the campsites position. What would really help is an onsite local bits and pieces shop eg. For ice, milk bread etc; especially for disabled campers.

Very enjoyable stay + an additional night. Very friendly owners
