Main campsite with spectacular views of the howgill fells
The main camping field for families

  • Family-friendly Yorkshire Dales farm near the Dales Way
  • In southern Cumbria, a mile from the centre of Sedbergh
  • Walk to Sedbergh for dog-friendly pubs, cafés and eateries in 15 mins
There's something mightily tempting about staying on a working Dales farm with cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and goats. Farm and Fell Campsite is a peaceful farm site in scenic southern Cumbria, just 15 minutes' walk away from Sedbergh, where guests can get stuck into a number of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and family-friendly eateries. This site is something of a geographical oddity, being located within the borders of the Yorkshire Dales but outside the boundaries of Yorkshire. The surroundings have all the stunning scenery you'd expect from this national park location, with highlights including the nearby river Rawthey, miles of dry stone walls and views over the spectacular Howgill Fells. Walkers itching to get out and explore it all have footpaths (including the Dales Way) that start almost opposite the site entrance. Every pitch at Farm and Fell Campsite has its own firepit; hardwood logs, sticks and firelighters are available from the farmer between 6pm and 8pm every evening. Farm activities may also be available (to be booked separately – mention you're interested on the booking form to learn more). These include lamb feeding, calf rearing and goat walking.

What customers say

Reviewers love the gorgeous location, welcoming owners, and closeness to Sedbergh. Enjoy farm animals, fire pits, and spotless washrooms with hot showers. Some find the basic amenities fine, others wish for more sinks and steadier shower temps. Mud after rain and occasional noise are mentioned. Perfect for a chill, rural getaway.

Main Field primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked - Lots of options of where to pitch up to choose from
- Nice field down by the river as the furthest option
- Great location for walks
- Owners came round offering logs of wood

Disliked When we visited it was booked out to what felt like over capacity. Hundreds of people cramped in. We have two dogs and like to have space so they can settle but had people within 1 metre of our pitch. There didn’t seem to be any specified spots or even a limit to how many people were allowed to book.
If choosing the further fields, there are two portaloo’s and the showers / washing up station are a good 15minute walk from the furthest pitch we chose.

Liked Showers and toilets clean with hot running water. Small wash area for dishes. Could stroke Highland cattle, pigs and veal, I mean baby cows. Friendly reception with small shop with bits and bobs. 20 min walk into Town of £6 Uber.

Liked We staying in the river field and we couldn't fault the site at all!

Love being directly next to the river, the freedom to choose your own spot instead of being told where to go, and just how peaceful the whole place was!

Main Field primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location, owners/staff, size of pitches, use of fires etc.

Disliked Toilets/showers are a bit basic. For the size of the site, I feel more showers / toilets would be better.

Lack of bins / recycling

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: The number of toilets and showers is dictated by the Yorkshire Dales National Park planning authority who don’t like campsites in the national park, so it’s a constant battle to provide affordable camping for the hardworking majority of people on a budget.

It’s a vicious cycle. The national park make campsite applications difficult, less campsites open, so we get mobbed in busy times. We could just turn families away and say we’re full - but we ask everyone for a little patience and understanding to try and accommodate more families.

We don’t put bins on the campsite because the amount of rubbish left is ridiculous when we do. Instead we come around the campsite at 0900hrs and 1030hrs to collect rubbish directly from each pitch.

All rubbish is recycled by the skip company after collection.

Sincerely

Brian

Main Field primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very scenic site. Felt close to nature. Also really liked the fire pit that comes with seemingly every pitch

Disliked The pitches felt slightly close together but not by a lot. Toilets, though clean, were unisex which my partner doesn't like too much.

Local attractions

Guests at Farm and Fell Campsite have access to the Dales Way footpath within a few minutes' walk of base, opening up 80 miles of traffic-free trails, most of which run alongside local watercourses. Whether you head south to the Pennines or north to the Lakeland foothills, walking in this part of the world is always a very special experience. Sedbergh town centre (15 minutes' walk) is also close by, with places to stop for snacks and drinks and a couple of book shops (one of them very large) where you can pick up some holiday reading material. For more low-key local things to do, check out Farfield Mill five minutes' drive down the road, or set off on a round trip on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway from Garsdale (20 minutes' drive). Into your sport? Try Killington Sailing Association's watersports centre (10 minutes) or the Lakeland Climbing Centre (30 minutes).
