  • Basic and remote campsite five minutes’ walk from Wastwater in Cumbria
  • Wastwater Alpaca Trekking 25 minutes’ drive; Ravenglass 20 minutes
  • Pop-up pitches on a Lakeland fell farm; direct access to Scafell Pike
If you’re after a spectacular wild camping spot to lay down your head, you’ll certainly find it at Wasdale Lakeside Pop-up Campsite. Set on a working Lakeland farm, this Cumbria pop-up site is big on views, looking up Wasdale to Yewbarrow, and right down to the shores of Wastwater. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join your Lakeland jaunt, but must be kept on a lead at all times as there are always sheep about. You’ll all get lots of exercise, as there are numerous walks into the scenic Wasdale Valley from the camping field. Talking of the camping field, pitch numbers are limited so your wild camping experience can stay a private, peaceful one. Simple amenities run to portable toilets, on-site water in a container, cold running water a short walk from the pitches, recycling and washing lines for drying clothes and wetsuits. Small barbecues are allowed, but please place them on the slates provided. Pick up any vital supplies in Eskdale Stores (15 minutes’ drive), or order takeaways from the Lion and Lamb pub in Gosforth (they’ll deliver to your tent). If you fancy a change of scenery, hotfoot it down to the pubs in Nether Wasdale (10 minutes or half an hour’s walk). Please note there are no showers and no electrical hook-up points at this campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Tranquil site, basic but has everything you need, within 2mins walk of the water front and right next two the river. Sawmill cafe is at the end of the road which does amazing local food, also 15mins drive to Wasdale head ideal for Scarfell and that range, you can also walk straight up on the fella from the site! Great hosts - would highly recommend for wild camper / couples - not really suitable for large group or kids tho.

Disliked: For me it was perfect / bliss not super busy and chilled. If you want glamping & hot showers then might not be right for you. This is off grid

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful location, we went on a clear night and looked at the stars for hours. They completely filled the sky. All you can hear is a nearby stream which is wonderful to fall asleep to. Kept very tidy, is very private (a field at the end of lots of farm fields) and very spacious. The sun rises and sets either side so I honestly could not have asked for anything else. Even has toilets and a rubbish area (kept well away from people). We took a very short walk through the woods beside the campsite to Wasdale Lake. We literally couldn't have been closer.

Disliked: It is hard to find, but there is lots of info on the booking email and a helpful text from them which you should definitely refer to beforehand. Portaloos are never going to be fantastic but any facilities are better than none.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely amazing scenery, peaceful, not too busy, very welcoming and helpful hosts. Would absolutely love to visit again next summer. Really short walk to lake, even the lake was not too busy in the middle of school summer holidays and heat wave. Lots of nearby stunning walks.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This beautiful campsite, buried within the mountains, is the perfect location for a wholesome holiday in The Lakes. Myself and my friends spent one night here and wished we had booked for longer. We pitched up by the stream at the bottom of the campsite which was very peaceful to fall asleep next to. No service which made our stay even more wonderful as we could just concentrate on being in one an others company. We will 100% be back here next year!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Size and cleanliness of grounds. Cleanliness of Toilets. Proximity to Lake. Friendly hosts.

Disliked: Current ‘porta-loos’ very hot in sunny weather. Semi-permanent shower/toilet block would improve facilities massively, have seen large trailer/container blocks used at other pop-up sites with basic toilets and showers and a water spigot attached, would be excellent if looking to expand, otherwise facilities were spot on for a short stay.

Local attractions

Just five minutes’ stroll from the camping field, Wastwater is a hub for wild swimmers, scuba divers, paddleboarders and kayakers – you can hire gear from the rental shop 10 minutes’ drive away. The lake is also fertile ground for anglers, who can fish for Arctic char, trout and salmon (in season). Hardened hikers have direct access to ventures up Scafell Pike (three hours) from the site. If you’re thinking of less strenuous days out, play a round at Eskdale Golf Course (25 minutes), or take the weight off your feet completely with a train tour of the West Lakes fell and mountain scenery on Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, locally known as ‘La’al Ratty’ (15 minutes). Local kid-friendly options include trotting through the fells with alpacas at Wastwater Alpaca Trekking (25 minutes), or a gentle scramble up Wasdale (an hour and a half’s walk from the site) to the Fairy Pools. The sand-and-shingle beaches at Seascale (25 minutes) and Ravenglass (20 minutes) are both dog-friendly, with lots of rook pools for splashing around in.
