If you’re after a spectacular wild camping spot to lay down your head, you’ll certainly find it at Wasdale Lakeside Campsite. Set on a working Lakeland farm, this Cumbria pop-up site is big on views, looking up Wasdale to Yewbarrow, and right down to the shores of Wastwater. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join your Lakeland jaunt, but must be kept on a lead at all times as there are always sheep about. You’ll all get lots of exercise, as there are numerous walks into the scenic Wasdale Valley from the camping field. Talking of the camping field, pitch numbers are limited so your wild camping experience can stay a private, peaceful one. Simple amenities run to portable toilets, on-site water in a container, cold running water a short walk from the pitches, recycling and washing lines for drying clothes and wetsuits. Small barbecues are allowed, but please place them on the slates provided. Pick up any vital supplies in Eskdale Stores (15 minutes’ drive), or order takeaways from the Lion and Lamb pub in Gosforth (they’ll deliver to your tent). If you fancy a change of scenery, hotfoot it down to the pubs in Nether Wasdale (10 minutes or half an hour’s walk). Please note there are no showers and no electrical hook-up points at this campsite. As this is a remote area, there is limited phone signal and data coverage; some networks have better coverage than others.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked This campsite is absolutely fantastic — perfect for families, groups, or solo travellers. It is fully dog-friendly, and you never feel cramped or overlooked — there is plenty of space between pitches, so you have total privacy. You can park wherever suits you, and there is never any shortage of room.

Campfires and barbecues can be used here. If you need to borrow one or buy some logs, the farmer is more than willing to accommodate and will do anything to make your stay perfect.

The campsite itself is surrounded by mountains and really peaceful countryside — it feels wonderfully remote and yet so welcoming. It sits right beside a river, and it's only a short 4-minute walk down to the lake. There's a lovely coffee shop at the lakeside serving delicious ice creams — great for children, and the dogs will absolutely love it!

Drigg Beach is only a short drive away — beautiful and full of shells, pretty stones, and wonderful sand dunes. I will definitely be coming back!

Liked Amazing location, the toilets were cleaned really often and it’s possible if you want to go pay to shower and the nearby youth hostel. One of the best campsites we’ve ever been to without a doubt and it wasn’t too crowded.

Liked It’s remoteness was just about right for this type of camping I was single camping fishing but take your essentials for the night before you arrive because the shops and pub are walkable 30 mins
It’s a fabulous place great for tents has fresh water piped to the field so you can fill up any time easy access to the lake itself which is spectacular’ you can buy logs off the farmer who is very helpful

Disliked Access road is rough mostly, so leave the Ferrari at home,Its a farm

Nice quiet and spacious place to stay

Disliked Only negative was the driveway up to the fields. Generally very worried I was going to get a puncture or scratch the car with stone chips.

Liked Perfect location, beautiful site, friendly farmer, quiet and peaceful! (And the highlight for the teenager was full signal and 4G!). Lovely cafe nearby, 200m to the lake, surpassed our expectations in so many ways! Great to escape the rush and enjoy the simple things in life such as the sound of the river running in the night, sheep bleating to wake up to instead of an alarm clock.

Just five minutes’ stroll from the camping field, Wastwater is a hub for wild swimmers, scuba divers, paddleboarders and kayakers – you can hire gear from the rental shop 10 minutes’ drive away. The lake is also fertile ground for anglers, who can fish for Arctic char, trout and salmon (in season). Hardened hikers have access to ventures up Scafell Pike (three hours) from the site. If you’re thinking of less strenuous days out, play a round at Eskdale Golf Course (25 minutes), or take the weight off your feet completely with a train tour of the West Lakes fell and mountain scenery on Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, locally known as ‘La’al Ratty’ (15 minutes). Local kid-friendly options include trotting through the fells with alpacas at Wastwater Alpaca Trekking (25 minutes), or a gentle scramble up Wasdale (an hour and a half’s walk from the site) to the Fairy Pools. The sand-and-shingle beaches at Seascale (25 minutes) and Ravenglass (20 minutes) are both dog-friendly, with lots of rook pools for splashing around in.
