General

  • Quiet, rural site on a working farm in the Lake District National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Kendal; 25 minutes from Windermere
  • Back to basics riverside pitches with easy access from A6

High Borrow Bridge Camping Site is a quiet site in the Cumbria countryside, in a handy spot close to the A6 20 minutes’ drive north of Kendal.

Pitches here are part of a working farm with sheep on site; dogs are allowed but just be aware that you’ll need to keep them under control at all times so they don’t get into any scrapes with their woolly neighbours. There's plenty of space, but please note that access means this site isn't suitable for motorhomes.

As you’d expect from a site within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park, there are lots of lovely walks to be had all around, and some splendid views from the pitches too, particularly if you wander down to the banks of the Crookdale Beck river (for a paddle, if you’re feeling brave) or look up to the dark skies at night. It’s likely that you’ll spend much of your time here out exploring the Lakes, but it’s also possible to get out into the Yorkshire Dales if you fancy conquering a second national park.

There are a couple of pubs about 15 minutes’ drive away from the site for those who’d like to eat out; if you’d rather simply crash out on site with a few drinks and snacks you’re welcome to light up a barbecue to cook over, or start a campfire (in firepits only, ta) to keep you toasty as dusk falls.

Facilities on site have been kept simple, with just a toilet block that has individual cubicles and hand sanitising stations nearby to keep everyone clean. Please note there are no showers on site, and there's no drinking water so you'll want to bring bottles along; there are also no bins so all guests will need to take rubbish away with them.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that size restrictions mean this site is able to accept campervans but not motorhomes.

The amazing views and helpful owner.
I appreciated the boards in the camping field to park my camper van on.
I did however manage to get my camper van stuck in a large wet grass verge, just up the hill from the campsite on the day I left as I was trying to turn my camper around (completely my fault as it was only the second day of driving the van!). My van was so badly stuck, I had no idea how I would get out! The owner came up the hill and was so helpful and friendly.... who wouldn’t want to get a tow from a handsome farmer?!

Quiet and back to basics site. Exactly what I wanted for a couple of nights away to relax and walk. Shame about the weather but what do you expect camping in October! Lovely pitch by the river. Full 4G signal too. Easy to find.

Only slight bit of feedback is I wasn't entirely sure what to do when I arrived - so I just went in and pitched. If you're supposed to go to the farmhouse perhaps just mention it :)

Lovely peaceful stay, just us, the stream and some inquisitive sheep for company!
Beautiful spot with easy access from the road but feels like the middle of nowhere.
We arrived late but the host called in advance to give us directions and was super helpful and friendly.
    Toilets clean and close by.

    Disliked:

The only downside was mud! But we knew it wasn’t hard standing, so didn’t expect that, and it was definitely worth it for the location rather than a big concrete site :)
Boards had been put down through the mud into the camper field but It was raining a lot and we managed to get stuck (no doubt our fault as we’d just picked up the camper hours before and didn’t really know what we were doing!). The very friendly farmer towed us out in the morning - Thank you!

From the manager...

Thank for your review it means alot then we can drain where we need to. Really don't want a concrete site. Glad you liked it here. X

As we drove over the hill and down the lane we were struck with the beauty of the site. The rolling hills, woolly neighbours and babbling brook made this stay feel relaxing and off the beaten track despite only being a mile or so from the A6.

The skies were truly dark with only moonlight to illuminate the hills. Fantastic opportunity for stargazing.

The toilet block was spotless and supplied with plenty of soap and sanitiser.

It’s the perfect site for breaking up a longer journey or exploring the wider Lakes.

Had such a lovely time on the Farm with such beautiful surroundings! Host was so warm, welcoming and helpful! Pitches were level and more than enough room for everyone to have their own space. Was lovely being on a working farm with sheep all around, even if they got in to bother and managed to open the gate in the middle of the night!! Managed to get them back in their field no problem though. Would love to come back again next summer!

The remote location next to a tranquil beck was a refreshing change from the usual campsites. Loved the total darkness on a night when you can see millions of stars and the Milky Way. The campsite owner was very friendly and chatty and I enjoyed the visits from the naughty sheep!
