High Borrow Bridge Camping Site: Pretty views

General

  • Quiet rural site on a working farm in the Lake District National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Kendal; 25 minutes from Windermere
  • Back to basics riverside pitches with easy access from A6

High Borrow Bridge Camping Site is a quiet site in the Cumbria countryside, in a handy spot close to the A6 20 minutes’ drive north of Kendal.

Pitches here are part of a working farm with sheep on site; dogs are allowed but just be aware that you’ll need to keep them under control at all times so they don’t get into any scrapes with their woolly neighbours. There's plenty of space, but please note that access means this site isn't suitable for motorhomes.

As you’d expect from a site within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park, there are lots of lovely walks to be had all around, and some splendid views from the pitches too, particularly if you wander down to the banks of the Crookdale Beck river (for a paddle, if you’re feeling brave) or look up to the dark skies at night. It’s likely that you’ll spend much of your time here out exploring the Lakes, but it’s also possible to get out into the Yorkshire Dales if you fancy conquering a second national park.

There are a couple of pubs about 15 minutes’ drive away from the site for those who’d like to eat out; if you’d rather simply crash out on site with a few drinks and snacks you’re welcome to light up a barbecue to cook over, or start a campfire (in firepits only, ta) to keep you toasty as dusk falls.

Facilities on site have been kept simple, with just a toilet block that has individual cubicles and hand sanitising stations nearby to keep everyone clean. Please note there are no showers on site, and there's no running drinking water so you'll want to bring bottles along; there are also no bins so all guests will need to take rubbish away with them. It's also a good idea to bring along some midge repellent for a stay at this site…

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

Please note that size restrictions mean this site is able to accept campervans but not larger motorhomes.

Please inform the site in advance whether you will be bringing a tent or a campervan so a suitable pitch can be allocated.

My first time camping & the owner even helped me put my tent up! Thank you - that made a big difference! (I’d probably still be struggling....) It was a perfect peaceful location - really away from it all. Loved lying in bed listening to the stream babbling along & the sheep having conversations with each other. Wished I could talk ‘sheep’ ...

    Disliked:

Nothing about the site - it was great! However, my dog’s behaviour wasn’t! She didn’t like being confined in a tent - & she loved rolling in sheep poo, which wasn’t a good combination! And she was under the misguided impression that every burger/bacon/ sausage being sizzled was for her!! And how dare anyone go to the loo in the night- she wasn’t having that! I’d go again but leave her behind!!

From the manager...

So glad you enjoyed it. 😉

Directions

The site owners recommend that you use these instructions and Google Maps rather than Apple Maps. On the A6 look out for Kendal Caravans, turning left just after it if coming from the south (or turning right just before if coming from the north). Go up the lane and cross the cattle grid – don't turn left through the wooden gate but go over the hill to the bottom. The site will be on your right.
