  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

What customers say

Peaceful, scenic spot with clean facilities & helpful staff. Spacious pitches, quiet vibe, on-site shop. Great for exploring but access road is narrow. Some shower sensor/water pressure issues noted. Manager addressed a pitch allocation concern.

Powered gravel campervan campsite

Liked A great base to explore the south of Lake Windermere! Site was well looked after and the facilities were immaculate - very modern and always clean & tidy. Staff were very polite and always an added bonus when there is a pizza van, little shop & tap room! WiFi was great whilst we were there also. Very dog friendly, we always appreciate sites that are more than just dog tolerant so this was a big bonus for us ☺️

Disliked Very narrow track to and from where the site is located from the main road which needs to be minded when booking here if you aren’t used to those types of roads.
Pitches are very close together, we felt as though we were on top of the pitches around us and vice versa so there is very little privacy.

Power optional grass campervan or tent campsite (large)

Liked Everything, the way the campsite is laid out, the peaceful rural surroundings, the general ambience and friendliness of staff, the shop and food can and ESPECIALLY the taphouse.

Disliked Minor gripe - the very sensitive on/off sensors in the showers and the way water pools in the middle of the washrooms.

Valley View power optional grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Lovely first camping trip. Really clean facilities and lovely welcoming hosts. The tavern bar was a great addition. The shop was useful too. Great hidden area and well worth the price.

Disliked Paid extra for a view of the valley but unfortunately a campervan was blocking it. Also would benefit from advertising different walking routes nearby instead of only cycle paths. No signal and wifi didn't work at our pitch; was fine for us as we didn't need it but just to be mindful.

Liked Hot showers. Modern facilities. Which were cleaned frequently. Small site that hasn't over stretch it's facilities.
Very friendly staff in the shop.

Disliked No bench in the shower. Obviously due to limited space but made it bit awkward drying after.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
