  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Powered gravel campervan campsite

Liked Liked this site when booking but on arrival our 1 night stay on a gravel pitch with electric turns out to be a wet soggy muddy patch of grass on the side of a road, when icomplained in an email about what happened we was lied to twice once saying it was available but we chose to go on the soggy grass then they said that the person in our pitch would of moved and let us go there well two different stories all from Richard, no offer of any refund at all or an apology this cost me £42.50 to camp on soggy wet muddy grass wow this company really knows how to treat there customers, see photos for evidence, not going to recommend this campsite just going to let others no the truth about what happened to us ,thank God it was only one night we was staying.

Disliked Paying £42.50 for a gravel pitch with electric and being told our pitch that we booked 3 months in advance was given to someone else and now we was camping on wet soggy muddy grass on the edge of a road and was unable to sit outside and have a fire pit and relax after a busy day which ended up in us both having a really horrible night's sleep, the road in to the site is full of pot holes the road was terrible, the shower and toilet area was dirty aswell definitely not been cleaned for people going to get ready for there day out, the worst thing about this site was being lied to by the owner in 2 different emails.

From the manager: In response to your review so others reading this get a fair and balanced overview as there always two sides to every story.

Firstly, we are sorry you did not enjoy your nights stay at Moss Howe Farm Campsite. We and all of our staff at Moss Howe work very hard to make our campsite the 'little gem' that most of our customers rave about after leaving. The vast majority of the 334 reviews are testament to this with review after review about how friendly and accommodating the wardens are. Certainly not in anyway the picture that has been painted here and we will not have our valued staff called liars.

Unfortunately, these particular guests did not engage with our staff to let them know they were unhappy. If they had, as our wardens who are extremely diligent would have sorted this our straight away. In addition, no mention was made the following morning and it took them nearly a full week to make any sort of contact with us.

Moss Howe Farm campsite is a beautiful little secluded campsite. It's clearly not for everyone! But if you like an off the beaten track campsite, with traditional values and great customer service then please do give us a try. You won't be dissapointed.

Liked A very peaceful site with excellent facilities - the toilets and showers are the best we have seen. The couple who welcomed us to the site could not have been more friendly and helpful. The little shop is cool and we enjoyed our morning fresh croissants.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
