  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Liked Friendly staff
Good toilet block
Well stocked shop

Disliked Our pitch was very muddy.(no 18).
My son's pitch (no 32) was directly behind the gents toilets and was smelly.
The road to the campsite is also full of potholes and very bumpy.
The pub was closed for our visit June 11th to 15th.
There was no disposal facilities for campervan toilet.

From the manager: Hi,

Glad you enjoyed your stay & you liked our freindly staff, shop & facilties. We have worked very hard and continue to, in order to make every element of the campig experience at Moss Howe Farm Campsite as good as we can for every guest.

Just to pick up on a couple of points. It seems your son interpreted the site map incorrectly & pitched in completely the wrong place. Pitch 32 is a wonderful pitch at the very end of the Vallley View field well away from the facilities with great views all the way down the Winster Valley. One of the warden team did speak to him at the time to let him know he was in the wrong place. Following your comment I did an inspection of pitch 18 and it was in good order. We are predominatly offer grassed camping pitches and if it does rain like it had the full week prior to your arrival then soemthimes there can be some mud on site. We are however lucky in that we are on limestone pavement so isn't usualy a big issue for us and water drains very quickly.

The road to the campsite is a small country lane, not sure which way you drove to us but the main route off the main A590 is absolutely fine and in very good order. Other routes are on very small rural roads & may be in poorer condition?

With regard to the disposal of waste from your campervan toilet. We do not advertise that we have one available on site. We are however planning to add one in over the winter.

Unfortunately, due to an issue well out of our control the tap room did have to be closed from the Friday night. We did however set up a small bar on site with a variety of local ales, ciders and soft drinks to choose from.

Once again we are glad you enjoyed your weekend.

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked Perfect location for visiting the area.
Rural setting surrounded by beautiful views. Excellent facilities and plenty of hot water for showers and washing up. Well managed and friendly engaging staff who ensure that campers enjoy their visit. Quiet and peaceful and as a lone female I felt safe.

Disliked My only negative is a general observation that singe travellers quite often pay for 2 adults however it was worth every penny

From the manager: Hi Kathleen,

Thank you for such a lovely review. It is very important to us that all of our guests enjoy their stay on every level and most importantly have a feeling of safety on site. Thanks also for the feedback on the solo traveller charge. We will look into what we can do here.

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked Beautiful surroundings. Clean and accessible facilities. Foosball table and covered hangout spot when raining.

Disliked Having to pay for phone charger use (£1 for 15 mins charge). Couldn't get change from the shop so had no phone charge, making it harder to navigate walks in the area. Farm shop wouldn't take cash. Tent areas very close together with house in the background view.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the tiem to review.

Glad you enjoyed your stay with us at Moss Howe Farm Campsite and particulary appreciated the clean and accessible facilities. We have spent a lot of time and energy in getting these right.

With regard to issues you had in terms of charging your phone. it seems you used the paid for plug socket inside the facilities usually reserved for hair dryers as apposed to coming into the shop where we charge phones for a £1 until full.

Alternaitiveltly, if phone charging is really important to you we do offer fully electric pitches or I can recomend brining a battery pack next time you go camping.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
