Rake Meadows: Our van in the field

General

  • Spacious paddock with plenty of peace and privacy
  • Cheshire Oaks designer outlet shopping village within a 15-minute walk
  • A 15-minute drive from Chester and half an hour from Liverpool

Wind down wherever you wish at Rake Meadows – this site is on a two-acre paddock with a pick-your-own-pitch setup and tons of space to choose from. Set down a country lane in Cheshire next to a field full of horses and surrounded by tall hedges and trees, it feels pretty private and is next to a wildlife reserve with lots of birds and rabbits about.

So far so rural, right? Well, sort of. The site’s actually just a 15-minute walk from Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet with its huge selection of high-end goods at reduced prices. There’s also an aquarium, cinema, bowling alley and indoor golf next to the complex and plenty of places to source eats (including at a chain inn a five-minute walk away).

Eat here or stoke up the barbecue on base, then burn off any indulgences at a local gym with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and a sauna (15 minutes away on foot). There’s also direct access to a footpath for dog walks – and yep, you’re most welcome to bring the pup along to this pet-friendly park.

As for activities and attractions to jump in the car for, Chester is 15 minutes’ drive south (with its famed zoo a little closer by) and Liverpool is half an hour north. They’re both a breeze to get to as the site is easily located just off the A5117 (but please note that the trade-off for such a handy location is the presence of some road noise).

Please note

A shower block would be a very welcome addition

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to post a review and with such positive comments, really appreciate it. I think I’ve mentioned the shower situation previously, in green belt this would not be permitted. Additionally it would cost two years total turnover to install so is not commercially viable although I agree it would be great to have this facility. So pleased you’ll recommend us as well as visit again, hopefully see you soon 🙏🤞👍

Lovely site, lovely owner. Less than 10 minutes walk to the McArthur Glen outlet village, leisure facilities and restaurants.
Basic amenities (no showers) but clean and well kept site.
The fact that it's adults only suits us as there are no screaming kids, we like our peace and quiet (there is a little background road noise but it's to be expected being relatively close to the motorway but once evening comes it's quieter)

Nice and quiet. Well kept and great location for Cheshire Oaks and local pubs for meals. Very friendly lady but only there if you needed her so it was very informal.
Nice flat ground. Clean portaloo and bin area. Didn’t look for water or waste as only there for one night.

It's a great site and super convenient for both Cheshire Oaks and Wales.

Also close to Chester and not too far from the seaside.

I was lucky enough to have the whole site to myself for a couple of days.

Claire was super friendly and really helpful.

    Disliked:

Nothing. It is a very basic site (porta loos and no showers) but a really good one and great value for money

Upon booking I quickly received an email from the owner which included various bits of information I found useful. The campsite is a nice size, the toilets are portaloos but they were the cleanest ones I’ve ever seen! It is in a good location and we were shocked at how quick of a walk it is over to Cheshire oaks. We knew there would be noise given the location, however we didn’t find it to be an issue. I messaged the owner upon arrival and got a speedy response and she seemed lovely and more than helpful. I would definitely recommend this campsite and hope to be back in the future!

Thanks for such a lovely review, generally the site is pretty quiet although sometimes on a Friday or Saturday we get more guests. Usually only about 8 though so it’s not ever crowded. Glad you enjoyed the pub next door, super reviews from there so it’s nice to be able to recommend somewhere walking distance. Really pleased you’ll visit again, will look forward to seeing you soon, 🙏👍🤞

Local attractions

Check out Chester (15 minutes’ drive from the park), a city founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD and still with the red sandstone walls to prove it. Roam around the Rows in the old town too on the lookout for trinkets in the dual-level arcades before recharging with a sit down at the Roman amphitheatre slightly out of the centre.

Chester Zoo (10 minutes) is a little closer to the park than the city itself, so head here enroute to see the rhinos, big cats and red pandas. No car is necessary for visiting the underwater creatures at the Blue Planet Aquarium, however, as it's a 10-minute walk away.

To spend time outdoors, shuffle along the Shropshire Union Canal (five minutes’ drive); the "Shroppie", as the locals call it, branches off into the Llangollen and Montgomery canals over in north Wales (grand if you fancy a longer wander).

Must see

  • Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet (0.5 kilometers)
  • National Waterways Museum (3.5 kilometers)
