  • Spacious, peaceful West Yorkshire site funding a charitable cause
  • Next to Peak District National Park, 10 mins' drive from Holmfirth
  • Café, playroom and smart modern bathrooms on site
What if you could bag yourself an outdoor break just outside the Peak District National Park where the pitches are peaceful and spacious, there’s a café on site for tasty breakfasts and the bathroom facilities are clean and modern? Oh, and on top of that you knew your stay would be contributing to a charitable cause? If that all sounds like an excellent idea, take a look at West Yorkshire site The Woodhead Barn, about 10 minutes’ drive from Holmfirth and a few minutes away from the edge of the national park. The camping field here is run by members of Woodhead Mountain Rescue (a registered charity), with profits going towards funding the team’s work. In a way, you could possibly even be helping yourself with a stay here – if you ever get into difficulty in these parts, these are the people that are likely to come to your rescue… The campsite is just next to the main barn, a traditional stone building that’s been fully modernised to include smart modern toilets, two individual shower rooms and an accessible bathroom with a baby-changing facility. There’s also a playroom in the barn to help keep kids happy even on damp days, and it’s also home to the café, which serves up breakfasts and lunches (with various dietary requirements catered for). Out in the camping area, there’s plenty of space for all guests to spread out and enjoy the rural peace and quiet. You’re welcome to bring your dogs along to join the fun, and you’ll be allowed to bring barbecues and firepits as long as they’re kept off the ground.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Wonderful campsite run to raise funds for the mountain rescue team. Clean facilities, a nice barn with board games, a café where we had a delicious breakfast at a very reasonable price, and lovely hard-working hosts who were so helpful and put on a scavenger hunt and den building for the kids. Will definitely be back next year!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Local attractions

The surrounding moors have some great options for walkers and cyclists – everything from well-documented hiking trails and challenging mountain bike routes to places for a more gentle stroll among the natural landscapes. For example, Winscar Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place for a waterside wander. And of course, the Peak District National Park has a whole lot to offer too – you may like to walk around Dovestone Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive away) and up to the Trinnacle, climb to the summit of Holme Moss (20 minutes) or follow the Longdendale Trail (20 minutes). For a different day out, head to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (25 minutes), take the kids to meet the animals at Cannon Hall Farm (20 minutes) or head into Holmfirth to take a tour around Last of The Summer Wine locations and drop into Holmfirth Vineyard for a tour, a tasting or a meal.
