  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome as well. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

This site offers spacious, level pitches and a friendly vibe. The on-site pub gets rave reviews for its amazing food and cozy atmosphere. Staff are praised as helpful, and the location is great for exploring the Northumberland coast. While the pub's a highlight, some found the washrooms a bit dated/unclean. Train and late-night noise can be an issue.

Liked The pub and food available on site.

Disliked We’d booked a grass pitch with electric as we have dogs who like to sit out on the grass.
When we arrived the site was very busy. Unfortunately we didn’t get there until around 6pm as we’d travelled from the north of Scotland and the site was just a stopover on our way home. The owner didn’t seem to have any reference to our booking and just put us on what we assume was the only available remaining pitch (Hardstanding with no grass for us to sit out)The vans were crammed in like sardines and we were sited right next to the train line(East coast mainline).
We had food and drinks at the pub which was nice. Then headed back to the van hoping for an early night. Unfortunately this wasn’t to be as the trains were hurtling by every 10 minutes until after 10:30.
We woke early in the morning as we’d decided to head off early.
I nipped to the wash facilities (which were disgustingly. Looked like the showers hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. The toilets had no locks on doors and they were also terrible.
Thankfully we only had one night here

Liked Tidy site, clean toilet facilities, showers kept clean, helpful landlord, good all round.

Disliked Elson point hose split, children playing noisily, screaming until past 10pm, we don't blame the site owners for this.
Entrance/exit can prove a challenge as unable to see very far in either direction.

Liked Not a lot to like here.

Disliked Shower block is grubby, mouldy, no toilet rolls, cold water in showers, the whole block is in need of a complete revamp. Rusty pipe work and the shower curtains dirty were held up by 3 hooks. Not a nice experience.
The site is next to the main east coast railway line with trains running regularly and also a busy road.
The pitches are packed together. We were in a tent with electric hook up, £90 for 2 nights is excessive. The Saturday night we were there our neighbours in campervans were noisy till 1am.
The owner/manager was rude and unapproachable. Not a nice person at all.

Liked The quietness and pitch sizes for camping.

Disliked Staff were moody, especially the bar staff. We felt judged as a family as the kids were playing and enjoying themselves and yet the staff were rude to them.

Lots of rules regarding bbq’s, fires, gazebos, we felt like we couldn’t really do much without being in trouble which is a shame. Personally felt like the owners need to relax and allow people to camp properly instead of feeling like we’re being watched and not allowed to have fun.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
