  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome as well. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

Guests loved the welcoming vibe, roomy sites, and great pub grub. Handy for exploring the coast. Facilities are okay, but washrooms are dated and need work, with some cleanliness concerns. Train noise is noticeable but often manageable. A few found it crowded or had pitch issues.

Liked Quit the place

Disliked No toilet papers, dirty closet, (brush full or sh*t) when you take a shower, the light turn off (timing too short)
The funiest part is high speed trains passing along the pitches. The weirdest place for a camping and the dirtiest camping I ever see. Just run away!

Liked Hand dryer was powerful in ladies toilet block

Location as handy for family.

Disliked Water taps in ladies block just dribble water, not enough to rinse a toothbrush in the week but come Saturday they worked!!!

Dishwashing is outside so if it rains you get wet while doing it.

No toilet paper in some of ladies toilets

No hand-wash in ladies toilets

No dog walk you have to walk along a main road

Facilities are very dated and not very clean.

Liked Food in the pub is excellent.

Showers which look horrendous are actually very hot & good water pressure!

Disliked The trains passing right alongside the site stop just before midnight & the first trains start at 4.15am. Horrendously noisy! & you are right alongside the road.

Toilets have codes on the doors that no one can remember, needlessly difficult. Toilets are dirty, everything seriously dated, broken toilet seats, no water coming out of cold taps, toilet rolls on the floors & luke warm water out of 1 tap only. Not cleaned in the 3 days we were there. (Same stuff & rubbish on the floors since arrival)

Washing up sinks have luke warm water too.

Way overpriced.

Liked Flat

Disliked It says dog friendly but as you get there the sign you see is, don’t walk your dogs round the site, and there is no where to take them. And the trains🤦‍♂️

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
