  • Family-friendly farm site by the A19, 15 minutes’ drive from York
  • Askham Bog Reserve 15 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • A 10-minute walk from a historic pub; park and ride five minutes away
Looking to explore the gorgeous city of York, but fancy a rural location, perhaps with a little stargazing action at night? Then Meadow Field might be the place for you. On a farm just off the A19 (one of the main routes into York), this peaceful site sits about half a mile south of the village of Shipton by Beningbrough. That means a half-mile (or a 10-minute) walk to the local pub, a historic watering hole serving real ales, a range of gins and home-cooked meals (including popular Sunday lunches). In the opposite direction from Shipton, along the A19, is York (15 minutes' drive), with more dining options, pubs, shops and supermarkets. And the good news is that you won’t have to fret about finding a parking spot in the city or having the right app to pay for it: the York Park and Ride is just five minutes down the road – nice. Site facilities include a modern toilet block with a hot shower, plus a sheltered washing-up area and a tap for drinking water – plus oodles of space where the kids can play and burn a little energy. Or maybe you’d like to go for a family hike? A five-minute drive takes you to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Moorlands Woodland Nature Reserve, with colourful rhododendrons and azaleas, wooden sculptures and guided night-time walks to spy on the resident bats. Meanwhile, ponies graze at the Askham Bog Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where you might also catch glimpses of kestrels and red kites.

What customers say

A welcoming, family-run farm campground with a chill vibe and roomy spots (many with water/power). Clean, no-frills facilities, including hot showers, got props. Great location for getting to York by bus/park and ride. Kids loved the farm animals. Some noted road noise and unclear signs. Cash-only payment and few unisex washrooms were points to consider, but staff are helpful.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great location for visiting so many things.
Excellent 'The sidings' restaurant walkable from the site. Toilet block was basic but clean. Plenty of space.
Definitely a no frills basic option.

Disliked A little noisy from the road, railway and cockerels so not a complete away from it all. But you are aware of this at booking.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A beautifully simple campsite. Clean and tidy with basic but well maintained facilities (one toilet and one shower room in a little wooden building) and a friendly owner.

It is a very short drive to the York ring-road (to head off and explore the wider area) and the Park and Ride (to hop into the city without the hassle of parking there).

You can watch kestrels and buzzards from your tent and watch the rabbits grazing in the morning and evening as well as dodge the chickens and cockerels that mooch about the place!

We shall certainly head there if looking to camp in the area again.

Disliked Hard to walk along the main road (nothing to do with the site)
The entrance is on a busy road, so turning can be tricky (again, nothing the owner can do about the A19!)
You can hear the railway and the road which could be a thing if you are a really sensitive type.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Was just what you want from a camp site, had a toilet, shower and plenty of space to pitch up and relax, loved watching the chickes run around and with a 7 year old who loves the outdoors it was perfect. It's a short drive to the park and ride so getting into york was very easy and stress free.

Local attractions

Besides the glorious Minster, with a massive tower with far-reaching views over the city, York (15 minutes’ drive) has several interesting museums exploring such diverse subjects as its Viking heritage (Jorvik Viking Centre), the history of the railways (National Railway Museum York) and archaeology (the kid-friendly DIG). You can also walk along the medieval city walls. Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes) has tractor trailer rides, climbing structures and an indoor soft-play area with sand and ball pits. And of course, there are seasonal encounters with baby animals, including cheeky alpacas, soft ducks and chatty goats, plus the Piglets Maternity Ward. Built in the 18th century in the southern fringes of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (half an hour) is an elegant stately home. Highlights include the chapel, featuring stained glass by pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, plus the manicured gardens and 1,000 acres of parkland dotted with lakes and follies.
