  • Family-friendly farm site by the A19, 15 minutes’ drive from York
  • Askham Bog Reserve 15 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • A 10-minute walk from a historic pub; park and ride five minutes away
Looking to explore the gorgeous city of York, but fancy a rural location, perhaps with a little stargazing action at night? Then Meadow Field might be the place for you. On a farm just off the A19 (one of the main routes into York), this peaceful site sits about half a mile south of the village of Shipton by Beningbrough. That means a half-mile (or a 10-minute) walk to the local pub, a historic watering hole serving real ales, a range of gins and home-cooked meals (including popular Sunday lunches). In the opposite direction from Shipton, along the A19, is York (15 minutes' drive), with more dining options, pubs, shops and supermarkets. And the good news is that you won’t have to fret about finding a parking spot in the city or having the right app to pay for it: the York Park and Ride is just five minutes down the road – nice. Site facilities include a modern toilet block with a hot shower, plus a sheltered washing-up area and a tap for drinking water – plus oodles of space where the kids can play and burn a little energy. Or maybe you’d like to go for a family hike? A five-minute drive takes you to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Moorlands Woodland Nature Reserve, with colourful rhododendrons and azaleas, wooden sculptures and guided night-time walks to spy on the resident bats. Meanwhile, ponies graze at the Askham Bog Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where you might also catch glimpses of kestrels and red kites.

What customers say

Chilled-out, no-frills site with big, flat spots, a hit for hitting York via the park and ride. Folks love the helpful owners and farm critters. Toilets and showers are clean but basic and a bit sparse, with road/rail noise sometimes heard, though most say it's peaceful. Owners are looking at upgrades.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Easy to get to, and flat.
Near York centre so you can go out for the day.

Disliked There’s nothing wrong with the campsite but It’s near a busy road and you can hear the traffic which seems to be all night. It could do with a few more showers and toilets. Cold water at the washing up station only.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Greeted by owner upon arrival. Was able to choose own pitch. Pitches were flat. Hot Water for shower.

The owner was extremely helpful and found a rod, cut to size and also had some duct tape when a pole snapped when pitching for an emergency fix.

Few animals on farm, couple of pigs, geese, chickens.

Was close to park and ride, and a retail park 10 min drive.

Phone signal was good, could use data and make and recieve calls.

Camp was fairly quiet.

Disliked The site is very basic at the moment I assume they are trialling it out to potentially expand in the future? With this in mind there was there wasn't anything we disliked.

There's only 1 toilet and 1 shower but as we know this before we arrived (from other reviews, comments included owner owner looking to add more) this wasn't an issue.

The only thing that I would recommend is either paper towels in the toilet or a dryer. And some hot water for the washing up sink.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Lovely basic site. Low stress. Few chickens are geese and a big pig to look at. Shower basic but hot and powerful. Well maintained and clean.

Disliked Some road noise through the night from nearby main road but this will likely decrease as sound barrier planting grows in and would be livable with for a few nights. Could benefit from a second toilet and shower perhaps. A few moths in the shower so maybe a moths zapper in the outer area. Doesn't bother me but it would scare my wife and daughter.

Local attractions

Besides the glorious Minster, with a massive tower with far-reaching views over the city, York (15 minutes’ drive) has several interesting museums exploring such diverse subjects as its Viking heritage (Jorvik Viking Centre), the history of the railways (National Railway Museum York) and archaeology (the kid-friendly DIG). You can also walk along the medieval city walls. Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes) has tractor trailer rides, climbing structures and an indoor soft-play area with sand and ball pits. And of course, there are seasonal encounters with baby animals, including cheeky alpacas, soft ducks and chatty goats, plus the Piglets Maternity Ward. Built in the 18th century in the southern fringes of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (half an hour) is an elegant stately home. Highlights include the chapel, featuring stained glass by pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, plus the manicured gardens and 1,000 acres of parkland dotted with lakes and follies.
