  • Superior adults-only pitch at a working farm near Strensall
  • A 10-minute drive to York park and ride; 15 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Private wood-fired hot tubs with lovely far-reaching views
Anyone who’s ever thought of camping as being somewhat ‘rough and ready’ has clearly never seen the likes of Cowslip Farm. Come along to stay at this adults-only North Yorkshire working farm site and you’ll have access to your own private wood-fired hot tub… That hot tubs are a highlight (and just the place to settle down for some time gazing out at the gorgeous scenery, the local wildlife and the sunsets), but they are not the only feature available to guests – there’s also access to toilets, showers, a washing-up space and motorhome services including chemical disposal. With plenty of space to spread out on your pitch, and set it up just how you like it, it’s a most enticing spot for a comfy and romantic break for two. The location of Cowslip Farm is equally enticing – despite those lovely rural views all around, it’s actually very well placed for days out in York, a little under seven miles away. The city’s park and ride car park is about 10 minutes’ drive away and generally the best way to travel into the city centre for days wandering around all the historic attractions. Foodie favourite Malton is about a 20-minute drive in the other direction and well worth a trip. Closer to home, the village of Strensall is just under a mile away for access to shops, pubs and takeaways, and Strensall Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is about 100 metres away.

What customers say

This peaceful, beautiful site has private spots with wood-fired hot tubs and amazing views. Owners are friendly, offering great local tips. It's perfect for visiting York, with pubs nearby. Facilities are mostly clean, though some found limited numbers and no hot water for dishes. A few reviews noted train noise.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (hot tub)

Liked Friendly welcome and good advice as to cycling and walking routes plus best way into York. Adored the spacious pitches and I’m now convinced that every camping pitch deserves a hot tub. So lovely to come back to tent, heat up the tub and relax. Will definitely come again and would recommend to anyone.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (superior, hot tub)

Liked Owners were most welcoming lovely peaceful site situated near to York. Had a wood fired hot tub which we unfortunately did not use. But owners offered two nights free when booking next time I don’t think you can ask fairer than that

Disliked Nothing to dislike about this stopover

From the manager: Thank you for a great review. A shame you chose not to use the hot tub and made the decision prior to travelling so didn’t bring towels etc with you. I offered use of our hospitality towels should you change your mind, but you declined advising you had made the decision not use the hot tub when booking. Just want to make it clear you didn’t use the hot tub due to something we had done wrong or due to malfunction.
Looking forward to welcoming you back 😊

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (hot tub)

Liked The pitch itself was really nice. Spacious, clean, hot tub is a great feature. Staff were very welcoming and friendly.

Disliked Not really a dislike just could do with an upgrade of more toilets and showers. There is only one of each for the whole site.

From the manager: Thank you for your review.
We are a small CL site and as such advertise as only having a small shower/wc facility. Our email confirmation to all Pitchup customers re confirms this and also requests visitors with their own facilities use them during busy periods. During your visit there was only one other couple on site so you would have experienced no inconvenience in using the onsite facilities. As you were also nearly an hour late departing you enjoyed sole use of the shower/wc facility.
CL sites are smaller, quieter and offer fewer facilities, however, we go above and beyond traditional CL sites with our service and facilities…such as the hot tubs, picnic benches, rattan furniture etc.
Disappointing that you haven’t mentioned that we noticed you had not returned from a day out by late evening on your second day, so we lit the hot tub for you so that you could enjoy it upon arrival rather than having to wait until past 10pm to enjoy! That alone is 10/10 for customer service!
Hopefully you’ll find a site that’s more suitable to your needs for future hot tub camping trips away.
Thanks for taking the time to leave your comments 😊

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (superior, hot tub)

Liked Amazing pitch, spacious, private, beautiful views and the bonus of a wood fired hot tub!
I was met by the owner on arrival who was super friendly and helpful, gave me lots of useful information (takeaways, local attractions etc) and said she was on hand if I needed anything. Really reassuring as I was travelling alone.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (superior, hot tub)

Liked The site is an open year round adult only (guests under 20 not permitted) as well as being a pet free. The site is a CCC CS location as well as via Pitchup. Check in is 2pm and departure is 10am. We booked this site primarily for a hot tub, which 2 of their pitches have. On payment of your balance you are sent a useful pre-arrival email containing your arrival instructions and the offer of a hot tub pre-light service for £10.00and you need to text the day before you arrive with your arrival time. The pre-light service is payable in cash only and your stay includes all the wood you use but you do need to take your own firefighters for your subsequent hot tub use as you have to empty & refill the tub each day.

On arrival we were very warmly greeted from a lovely host and sh

Thr site has a small unisex toilet shower block containing a sink, electric shower cubicle with height adjustable shower head and a toilet cubicle. All were step free, although no grab rails. All were clean and well looked after and more than adequate for a small site. They do ask that if you have your own facilities you try and use them. Outside the block there is an outdoor washing up sink and general waste, recycling and grey water drain. The elsan point is a liftable drain cover and hose pipe near the entry gate.

We booked their superior hot tub pitch which cost £90 per night and was hardstanding and grass EHU with a wood fired hot tub and picnic table and water fill. Pitch was a very healthy 80msq. The hot tub was at the rear of the pitch protected by a privacy fence on 2 sides and we had a lovely private view over a field where we saw deer, birds of prey and the odd farm cat. Although not a dark sky site, there was minimal light pollution from the nearby village due to the far sides of the field having good tree cover.

The site is close to York, with a regular bus service running from the village taking 23 mins depending on the service, Uber costs approximately £12 per journey and there is also a park and ride not too far away. The village of Strensall is 15 minute walk away. Probably not a suitable walk for anyone with accessibility issues due to the lack of pavement part of the way. On turning right from the site entrance there is a 5 minute walk facing on coming traffic along a wide verge which wasn’t too bad at this time of year as it wasn’t overgrown. The road at this point is a 60 zone but all motorists gave us a wide berth as we stepped up from the road onto the verge. I don’t know if the verge is maintained or cut back at all during summer so it might be more of a problem in the warmer months. On the opposite side of the road the verge is not as wide and has a deep, water filled gully so if you make your return walk after dark take a torch and high vis and take care. Once you reach York Golf clubhouse the verge is more flat grass, and turning right you are on the village road which has pavement and dropped curbs. There is also a little woodland walk suitable for pedestrians and powered wheelchairs only. From the golf club corner it is a 10 minute walk to the pub. There are 2 pubs pretty much next to each other, the Half Moon and the Ship Inn. Here you will also find a Tesco extra, Boots (not open at weekends), a vets, a chippy and a coffee shop in the local church and one in the library. There is another pub and a coffee shop a little further way. There is a Chinese takeaway in the village, and a nearby Indian and pizza. All will deliver to site on appropriate phone numbers are included on the info sheet you are given on arrival. The site is not too far away from Clifton Moor retail park.

We spent as long as we could in the hot tub and we really, really enjoyed the site so we would absolutely return. The roe deer come right up to the pitch and it was lovely to sit in the tub and watch them watch us. It’s on our list for a return visit.

Local attractions

A trip to York (10 minutes’ drive to the park and ride) is a must, of course – it’s easy to spend a day or two exploring the attractions there, whether you’re walking the city walls, taking a river cruise, stopping by at the minster or visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre, National Railway Museum and York Chocolate Story. There are also lots of places to eat and drink, and a stroll down The Shambles makes a splendid shopping experience. York’s the big hitter, but there are other towns nearby that are worth a look, including Malton (20 minutes) for its independent shops and monthly food festivals, and Whitby, Bridlington and Scarborough (all within an hour) for a breath of sea air. Castle Howard (15 minutes) makes another great day out – the setting for Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton is a handsome place that often stages events. To keep it all about the outdoors, head into the Howardian Hills (15 minutes), try the Go Ape course in Dalby Forest (40 minutes) or visit the National Centre for Birds of Prey (35 minutes).
