Cotril farm

  • Peaceful, simple rural site on a family-run North Yorkshire farm
  • A 15-minute drive to Castle Howard; 35 minutes to York
  • Wild camping, Howardian Hills views, sheep and pigs in the fields
Cotril Farm Campsite is a back-to-basics site on a working farm in North Yorkshire’s Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This remote spot is set up to be somewhere you can forget life’s pressures, let the children burn off energy running in the fresh air and set out on foot to explore nature. On the farm you can make friends with pigs, sheep and chickens, and buy ‘happy eggs’ from free-range hens for breakfast around the campfire. Sourcing supplies for your barbecue is easy, as the local village of Terrington has handy shops. It’s also home to the Yorkshire Lavender Farm, a 60-acre hillside farm where you can wander lavender fields and pick up plants. Plenty of walks and bike rides in the Howardian Hills AONB start right from the farm, and the North York Moors National Park has a range of hiking and cycling routes too. From the camping field there are distant views of Castle Howard in one direction and Sutton Bank (plus its landmark White Horse) the the other. Jump in the car and explore market towns like Malton, Helmsley and Thirsk, all packed with indie shops, cosy pubs and farmers’ markets. The Roman walls and history museums in York are well worth a peek too. If you’re holidaying with the kids, York’s Jorvik Viking Centre makes a top-notch day trip for them (book ahead though), or you can spoil them with thrill rides and animal encounters at Flamingo Land Resort.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Second time of staying here, my partner lives in Norton but it’s just so nice to have a night away. Pitched up after the rain had cleared. We were the only ones on the site, it was so peaceful. Had a walk into the village then a drive to Sheriff Hutton for a couple of hours and a beer at the pub. Watched the sunset and enjoyed the countryside surroundings. It’s perfect for us and we will definitely return.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great pop up camping, loverly views of hills and grazing sheep.
Farmer and daughter always available for any help.
Pitch was a great size, clean, tidy and plenty of space between people.
Farm produce available to buy and delivered to your tent when ready to cook.
Water areas and portaloo always kept clean.
Fantastic to find a site that allows fire pits to be used - fire pits and logs can be hired.

Be aware it’s a working farm so there is animal noise from the pigs, but you soon get used to it and switch off.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful site. Owners are friendly and very helpful. There's meat packs available to buy, which was delicious 😋 The toilets were kept clean, could possibly benefit from a few more.
Absolutely loved it at this site. The pigs kept us entertained with their noises 🤣

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Isolation of site, no traffic or railway noise.

Disliked Gently sloping site. Holiday weekend so many campers. Insufficient (2) portaloos. Both at entrance. Long walk from other side of field. Pitches around perimeter of field. Better if some in centre of field.
