  • Off-grid shepherd’s hut in a secluded spot with moorland views
  • A 40-minute drive to Whitby and Pickering, and 45 minutes to Goathland
  • Adults-only retreat with kitchen and barbecue
If you’re after an off-grid hideaway with plenty of wildlife, cycling and walking right from your doorstep, High Langdale Hideaway has got you covered. It’s a wonderfully romantic and secluded shepherd’s hut for couples in search of romance and tranquility, three miles from the nearest road and blessed with spectacular views across the North Yorkshire Moors. Move around quietly during your stay and you have every chance of spotting badgers, deer and birds of prey. If you’re feeling active, the cosy wooden hut is on the Moors to Sea Cycle Network, and if that’s a bit too challenging, well, just walk out of the door and you’re in Langdale Forest or on moorland – and thanks to the lack of light pollution and no electricity on site, you’ll see the Milky Way glittering overhead on clear nights. And what about facilities in the accommodation? It may be strictly off-grid, but the hut is cosy, warm and cleverly designed to maximise space. The site owners have built the hut themselves with reclaimed wood, larch cladding sourced locally and using sheep’s wool for insulation. With a small kitchen area and a balcony for warm nights enjoying the views, there’s also a campfire with a grill for barbecuing, and close by you’ll find a separate, wooden hut with an off-grid hot shower and compost loo – pack a torch for late-night forays. If you’re going self-catering for your North Yorks glamping break, there’s a choice of supermarkets on the outskirts of Scarborough (25 minutes).

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types, you’re right on the Moors to Sea Cycle Network here, and you can get up to all sorts of walking adventures – climb up to Hole of Horcum (half an hour’s drive, or walk there via Lilla Cross) for glorious views over the moors, or go in search of the Roman remains at Cawthorn Roman Camp (50 minutes). If you’re after something a bit more extreme, the zip wires and rope courses at Go Ape Dalby (half an hour) will keep your fitness levels sky high. How about making an historic train journey across the moors? Jump on the North Yorkshire Steam Railway at Pickering (40 minutes) and chug to Goathland (45 minutes), where you can see film locations from the Harry Potter films and lunch in cosy pubs. Fancy a change of pace with a day at the seaside? Scarborough (25 minutes) has lots of old-fashioned fun on two sandy beaches, while at Whitby (40 minutes) you can climb up to the Gothic abbey, shop for local jet jewellery, and pick up fish and chips around the harbour.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: This place was so good I'm hesitant to write a review so that others know about it. almost want to keep it secret. however, I really can't praise the Langdale hideaway enough. everything about it was amazing from the location to the accommodation and the hospitality of the host. Without getting carried away and going on about it in detail, all ill say is everything was perfect. Actuallyt feels like we underpaid. We couldn't have asked for more. already planning to return. 11/10

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The owner was very hospitable and arranged to meet us at the site. The accommodation was beautiful and very clean. We were given a beautiful welcome basket which included a bottle of wine. A lovely breakfast was delivered in the morning. The site is very remote and peaceful.

Disliked: The track from the road is very long but it wouldn't put me off staying again.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: I'd like to say before I start I have never written a review in my life but I feel this place definitely deserves the time! This sort of break/holiday isn't for everyone but for the people that like to get back to basics in an exceptional location with the most spectacular views. Wow! You have found that golden gem at last! The owner has hit the nail on the head! This shepherds hut is the only one so you have totally privacy and relaxation. Inside the accomodation you have everything and more than you need. It's very clean and tidy with some nice little touches such as a welcome pack, fresh, delicious breakfast and milk delivered daily to the American style post box outside. Delivered early for you to enjoy at your convenience. There is a separate hut with composting toilet (which is very clean and didn't smell!) Really powerful hot shower with amazing views lol. We enjoyed cooking over the open fire using the Dutch cooking pot and tripod provided. We would then chat the night away watching the flames and listening to music whilst having a cheeky beer. I'd like to mention the owner Micheal who knows what he's doing when it comes to hosting, he made us feel very relaxed, warm and welcome right from the start. I feel he gave us our privacy but was only at the end of a phone if we needed him and nothing was to much to make sure we had an amazing stay! Look forward to returning for a winter break. Many Thanks Ben and Leah

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Langdale hideaway is perfect if you want an off grid remote break that is a different experience. Its peaceful, idyllic and high quality The hosts Michael and Jayne have been so thoughtful in designing this little hideaway and their personal touches and treats make it extra special It is clean well equipped and cosy, the bed is so comfortable The toilet and shower are outside in a different building but has a hot powerful shower and compost loo, all lit up with night lights to find your way All equipment, wood and firelighters are supplied for the firepit and there is a grill for cooking and a Dutch oven too This is very remote so supplies are needed food etc there is a hob and grill indoors and an excellent cool box we stayed for 3 days and this was suffice for us Location is amazing looking out onto open fields surrounded by forests, wildlife and fresh clean air we could'nt have wished for anything more, simply perfect if you are looking for a simply remote place to chill

Disliked: I honestly can say we didnt dislike anything it was perfect for us

Shepherd's hut

Liked: On the edge of a vast untamed woods looking out over fields, forests and moorlands, The location was truly breathtaking. Waking up to the view and drinking a brew from the veranda of our little hut listening to the birds sing and the chickens curiously pottering around. This place is incredible and Michael is a most gracious host, We were expecting an off the grid experience sponge bathing with cold water and using tourches for light.. We were greeted by a surprisingly well kitted out cosy accommodation with lighting, a hot shower, towels, snacks and a gas hob and grill. Needless to say the place was incredible and Michael has done such a fantastic job of the place, We had a magical couple of evenings away in this truly spectacular location. Not only would I advise it to anyone but I would also go back myself and can't wait to do so. Thanks so much for having us. Jake & Amy

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything about our stay was lovely. We wanted a peaceful place to go to for our wedding anniversary and that’s exactly what we got. Michael were there to meet us and also to say goodbye which I thought were really nice of him. Even though no one were around we knew if we needed anything then Jayne & Michael would be there. The hut were so cosy and the views were amazing. We will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you for all our goodies and thank you so much for a lovely memorable stay 🥰

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Michael and Jayne are the most loveliest hosts ever!! We have stayed in so many places from log cabins, hotels, cottages and many more nothing compares to this place and the hosts too. The Shepards hut was the best by far. All of the little touches they made were amazing, the place was quiet and relaxing. There was no one around us at all we was left in peace! Being photographers the wildlife was captivating every head turn there it was! The Shepards hut was built so beautifully it was warm and rustic but cosey and romantic. Jayne and Michael were so responsive they answered all of our questions. They welcomed us on arrival and said bye to us. The shower was lovely! the bed was excellent! This place is priceless as soon as you open the shepards hut door there's nature! There's walks everywhere, the coast is close. I LOVE IT!!!!!! I WOULD 100% return again. We had a little fire during the night which was so cute we just played music on low and watched the flames, the wood is supplied. It's just lovely we was well looked after, Jayne and Michael are so lovely to talk to aswell. I actually had good signal here when I had my data on.

Disliked: Nothing!!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We genuinely believe this place has been undersold in the description. There is so much more to this cabin once you get in. It’s completely remote, beautifully quiet, stunning views and extremely cosy. The hosts could not be more friendly or do enough for us. The little touches by the hosts made this a fantastic stay. We were talking all the way home about going back in the summer.

Disliked: I knew this would be a small issue before arriving but being 6”2’ the bed is a little snug. Still, the mattress and bedding are ridiculously comfortable which made sleeping easy.
