  • Off-grid shepherd’s hut in a secluded spot with moorland views
  • A 40-minute drive to Whitby and Pickering, and 45 minutes to Goathland
  • Adults-only retreat with kitchen and barbecue
If you’re after an off-grid hideaway with plenty of wildlife, cycling and walking right from your doorstep, High Langdale Hideaway has got you covered. It’s a wonderfully romantic and secluded shepherd’s hut for couples in search of romance and tranquility, three miles from the nearest road and blessed with spectacular views across the North Yorkshire Moors. Move around quietly during your stay and you have every chance of spotting badgers, deer and birds of prey. If you’re feeling active, the cosy wooden hut is on the Moors to Sea Cycle Network, and if that’s a bit too challenging, well, just walk out of the door and you’re in Langdale Forest or on moorland – and thanks to the lack of light pollution and no electricity on site, you’ll see the Milky Way glittering overhead on clear nights. And what about facilities in the accommodation? It may be strictly off-grid, but the hut is cosy, warm and cleverly designed to maximise space. The site owners have built the hut themselves with reclaimed wood, larch cladding sourced locally and using sheep’s wool for insulation. With a small kitchen area and a balcony for warm nights enjoying the views, there’s also a campfire with a grill for barbecuing, and close by you’ll find a separate, wooden hut with an off-grid hot shower and compost loo – pack a torch for late-night forays. If you’re going self-catering for your North Yorks glamping break, there’s a choice of supermarkets on the outskirts of Scarborough (25 minutes).

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types, you’re right on the Moors to Sea Cycle Network here, and you can get up to all sorts of walking adventures – climb up to Hole of Horcum (half an hour’s drive, or walk there via Lilla Cross) for glorious views over the moors, or go in search of the Roman remains at Cawthorn Roman Camp (50 minutes). If you’re after something a bit more extreme, the zip wires and rope courses at Go Ape Dalby (half an hour) will keep your fitness levels sky high. How about making an historic train journey across the moors? Jump on the North Yorkshire Steam Railway at Pickering (40 minutes) and chug to Goathland (45 minutes), where you can see film locations from the Harry Potter films and lunch in cosy pubs. Fancy a change of pace with a day at the seaside? Scarborough (25 minutes) has lots of old-fashioned fun on two sandy beaches, while at Whitby (40 minutes) you can climb up to the Gothic abbey, shop for local jet jewellery, and pick up fish and chips around the harbour.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely brilliant, everything is provided, and nothing is too much trouble. There is loads to do locally, but to be honest the views are so stunning you could happily just sit outside and look at the scenery

Shepherd's hut

Liked: This place was so good I'm hesitant to write a review so that others know about it. almost want to keep it secret.

however, I really can't praise the Langdale hideaway enough. everything about it was amazing from the location to the accommodation and the hospitality of the host.

Without getting carried away and going on about it in detail, all ill say is everything was perfect. Actuallyt feels like we underpaid.

We couldn't have asked for more. already planning to return. 11/10

Disliked: going home
