Moo. Baaa. If you can stop your other half from nattering, these might be the only sounds you hear at lush and hushful Usha Gap Campsite in North Yorkshire. This peaceful place is on a working sheep and cattle farm in the Swaledale Valley, and has campers flocking to it for its calmness and its warm welcome by Philip and Louise, whose family have been farming this land for over 70 years. We think you’ll be mooved too by the views of the surrounding valleys and hills: just have a look at the Usha Gap gallery pics. The grass pitches at Usha Gap are in two separate areas on the farm, one in a small field next to the beck (see pic 1) and the other in a bigger field beside the farm and looking over Kisdon Hill; Facilities are basic but clean, and include hot showers, loos and a washing-up area. Barbecues and campfires are allowed. Although Usha Gap is in a shushful location, there’s plenty to rush to around it: walks including the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast are close by, and the farm is only half a mile from two villages, Muker and Thwaite. Muker has the Farmers Arms pub (‘muddy boots, dogs and families welcome’), and a village shop and tearoom; Thwaite the Kearton Country Hotel with coffee lounge, pub and restaurant. The nearest market town is Hawes, six miles away, and there’s a farm shop within walking distance.

Local attractions

Nearby market town Richmond has been described as ‘an absolute gem’ by the Rough Guide and we fully agree (and want to go back to Richmond Castle). There are the usual shops, pubs and restaurants to be expected in any big town, but it’s all on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and has an eleventh century castle in its town centre. There are oodles of other towns and villages within easy reach, such as Reeth with the Swaledale Museum; Hawes for the Wensleydale Cheese Creamery, and Aysgarth with the famous Aysgarth Falls, favourite spot of dale and moor wanderer Wordsworth. Both Aysgarth and Richmond have national park centres crammed with info on what to do in the park, from horse-riding and mountain biking to canoeing and caving. If you don’t mind a drive for a day trip, there are two other national parks to reach from Usha Gap: the North York Moors National Park is to the east and leads to seaside towns like Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington, and the Lake District National Park is to the west to see England’s highest mountain and deepest lake. Sticking closer to home, most folk who come to North Yorkshire want to walk at least a bit of it: both the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast Path meet at Muker and there are several smaller stretches of both for those who want to do a day walk.
