  • Well-kept touring pitches on the edge of the North York Moors
  • Pickering, Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard within 20 minutes' drive
  • A mile from Kirkbymoorside and close to bus stops
The views are about as rural as they come at Gateway to the Moors Caravan Park… and as its name suggests, this scenic hideaway is just on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. More specifically, it’s in the tiny village of Keldholme and surrounded by mature trees, with the River Dove on one side and a working farm on the other (and open countryside all around). Yet this site is surprisingly well connected: it’s easily accessed from the A170 and a mile from Kirkbymoorside, a market town with shops, pubs, takeaways and other amenities. There’s also an excellent bus service here (for outings around the Moors, to York or to the coast) and another bus stop in the village for jaunts to local towns. The park’s hardstanding pitches are well kept, with views down the field to the river, electric hookups and water close to each pitch. The team here takes pride in its lawns – the grass is cut regularly, and although barbecues are permitted, you’re asked not to put them on the grass. You may bring your own, but free firepits are provided for each pitch and bags of wood can be purchased on site. Handily, the site's entrance and exit are covered by security cameras and free wifi is available around the entrance/exit area. There are eco-friendly touches around the place too: recycling is encouraged, and there are facilities for charging batteries and electric bikes. This part of North Yorkshire is a great area for walkers and cyclists – stroll straight out from the site through the woods to pick up local footpaths if you don’t fancy straying too far. The site is also less than five minutes' drive away from Ryedale Auctioneers, an auction house, and 15 minutes' drive away from vehicle storage buildings in Pickering.

Liked Lovely clean site, pitches with a nice view and very spacious. Jayne was very friendly and helpful. Also there were some details on the walks from the site itself which was great to have. Hutton le Hole only 2 miles away a lovely place to visit as is Farndale - such beautiful walks here too. All in all a fabulous stay!

Liked A great site, very peaceful. Jane was lovely and came to meet us to make sure we were ok. There’s a lovely walk (about 15 mins) to kirbymoorside through some fields and a river to paddle your feet in. Pitches are well spaced and level. Plenty of recycling bins. Will definitely stay again.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked It was a lovely small with only 6 pitches. It was a very peaceful site, pitches were a good size and each pit had a complimentary pit for you to use. Logs were available to buy. The owner was lovely and friendly, she made sure you was welcomed and available if you needed anything. Nice walks around, and in walking distance to the village. A was a very basic site but it was nice to get away and chill.

Disliked Would have been nice to have a shower block but as we was in a motorhome this didn’t bother us as we had our own bathroom. As it was a small site it felt that we had more conversations with the other campers.

Liked What's not to like. This is my second time here in two weeks. Hosts are fantastic, the site is immaculate and peaceful. Yes occasionally you hear the roads and the pigs across the road but so what it does not ruin what is an amazing place. It is not enough to be a distraction so ignore any reviews that complain about it.

The site was full both times and we had end pitch over looking the stream it felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Small sit with only 6/7 pitches. Honestly couldn't ask for a better place.

I will be coming back even the kids liked it first time and they are teenagers. Didn't take them this time but just as good as first time. Do have a walk into kirkbymooreside it's well worth the walk and a good stretch of the legs. Jayne has left detailed instructions for you on each pitch go the field way as that was an adventure the kids loved it.

This place really is a hidden gem and absolutely worth the money.

Disliked I had to come home

Local attractions

Here, old railways, abbeys, museums and forest trails could all be part of your holiday schedule. Pickering (10 minutes’ drive) is your gateway for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Whitby (the location of the abbey that inspired Dracula) and Goathland (a village in the moors with a heritage station). If it’s history that gets you excited, then there are more historical sites scattered around: Rievaulx Abbey (15 minutes), a ruined Cistercian abbey, Ampleforth Abbey (20 minutes), a Benedictine abbey, or Castle Howard (20 minutes), a historical estate with playgrounds and huge grounds. For museums, there’s the Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum (20 minutes) and The World of James Herriot (half an hour). If it’s wildlife you’re after instead, visit the National Centre for Birds of Prey (15 minutes) or Flamingo Land (15 minutes), a zoo crossed with a theme park. And for the active days, perhaps the bike trails and Go Ape park in Dalby Forest (35 minutes), watersports in Scarborough (40 minutes) or sightseeing in York (50 minutes)?
