  • High Force waterfall 15 minutes’ drive; Raby Castle 15 minutes
  • Shop and country pub on site; kids’ play park 10 minutes’ walk
For your next adventure in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, how about choosing the North Pennines? Or more specifically, the smart wooden pods at Hilltop Huts, tucked behind a popular pub in Teesdale, and 10 minutes’ drive from Barnard Castle in County Durham? Sleeping up to five people, all the pods are equipped with a kettle, toaster, microwave, small fridge and storage. Outside, there’s a picnic bench for open-air eats on warmer days, as well as a covered pot-wash area, coin-operated washing and drying facilities, and a modern shower block, with hot water heated by green energy. There’s no need to fret if you’ve left anything vital behind at home, as there’s a well-stocked shop on site, where you can pick up disposable barbecues, charcoal and kindling if you fancy honing your alfresco cooking skills. And don’t forget that the Moorcock Inn, where you can be sure of a warm welcome as well as home-cooked food using produce from the owners’ farm, is (literally) steps away from your cosy pod. There’s masses to keep kids happy too. A games room in the pub has a pool table, darts board and dominos (handy for any drizzly days), while Eggleston Play Park (10 minutes’ walk) is all set up with zipwires, slides, swings, mini football and a basketball court. Or how about a family excursion to follow the Gruffalo Trail in Hamsterley Forest (20 minutes’ drive)?

Camping pod (three person)

Liked: Pod was huge!! Great having kettle & toaster & microwave available. The little heater was an added bonus to help warm the hut as it’s still very early spring. Toilet & washing up facilities are clean & close to pods. Having the pub attached is lovely. Had a lovely meal first night, portions are HUGE!! Sat outside & had a drink after our hike too. Staff very welcoming & would definitely recommend & come again!

Disliked: Nothing we disliked. Just a couple of tips if people stay, you don’t park next to your pod but where you park isn’t far. Just bare this in mind for carrying stuff back & forth if weather bad. The toilet blocks are cold, especially of an evening so time your showers to when it’s a bit warmer 🤣 The table in the pod converts to a bed so the cushions aren’t the most comfy even with mattress topper & bedding on so suggest bring an airbed too.

Camping pod (three person)

Liked: The style and cleanliness of the camping pods. It was clean, with easy access to the shower blocks and pub.

Disliked: The small panal heater was inadequate for the time of year I stayed therefore I would suggest taking a small additional fan heater for a bit more warmth during the cold winter nights.

Camping pod (four person)

Liked: Lovely site. The pod was a good size (we have 2 large dogs so booked a 4 person) and well equipped. The toilets were clean and warm. Didn’t try the pub as it was a bit full with a party on the Saturday night.

Disliked: £20 extra per dog was a bit steep

Camping pod (three person)

Liked: The area & views were lovely. The pod was nice, although basic is was practical and just what we needed. Also was cheap too

Disliked: Just that there was no staff to be seen, the shop wasn’t open. No one asked if we were ok or having a good time etc Also I would have expected people staying to be able to go to the pub for breakfast which would be good The area to wash dishes and showers etc could have a spruce up

Camping pod (five person)

Liked: Peaceful area toilets were clean and showers lovely and warm. Pod was clean and liked how there was something to clip the dog to. Really liked that it was dog friendly.

Disliked: Says they have a shop but don’t nothing on the shelves and never open. Seems to be no staff around everything was closed at checkout and no one new where you are meant to hand keys into would be nice for a member of staff to come and say hope you enjoyed your stay. Also would be nice for the pub to have more food choices and to do breakfast. The beds were not the comfiest but alright for the 2 nights we were there. Would be nice for them to supply bedding without paying extra like most places do. First night there was a strong smell of weed not nice

Camping pod (three person)

Liked: Clean pod, nice toilet and shower block. The site was beautiful! Very peaceful! Owners just left you alone to enjoy. Nice little play park about 6 min walk down the road and close to low force and Hamsterley Forest! We’ve had the best time!

Disliked: Booked a pod that said 2-3 people, it suited me just fine as I have 2 little ones but would say it’s more suited to just 2

Local attractions

Keen to cross the highest waterfall in England off your bucket list? Stroll the banks of the River Tees to High Force (15 minutes’ drive), with its stunning 70-foot drop. For more watery spectacles, amble up to Summerhill Force from Bowlees Visitor Centre (15 minutes), or head for Cow Green Reservoir (25 minutes) to hike up to Cauldron Snout, carved out of volcanic rock. Cyclists of all levels can follow the mountain-bike trails in Hamsterley Forest (20 minutes), where you can also take mindfulness walks through the trees, and for after-dark adventuring, wait for a cloudless night and head for the telescopes at Grassholme Observatory (10 minutes) to gaze up at the universe. To introduce a bit of culture into your holiday, tour medieval Raby Castle (15 minutes) for a romp through centuries of history in antique-filled rooms, and if the kids behaved, let them have a run around in the adjacent deer park afterwards. For impressive decorative-arts collections – including the famed Silver Swan automaton designed in 1773 – head for the Bowes Museum (15 minutes), and then have a poke around the indie shops in Barnard Castle (10 minutes).
