Wild camping in suffolk
Marshmallows all gone

  • Peaceful, family-friendly and spacious wild camping on a Suffolk farm
  • Sutton Hoo 10 minutes’ drive and The Suffolk Punch Trust 20 minutes
  • Off-grid site on a working farm; pets welcome; woodland walks nearby
When it’s a ‘proper’ Suffolk wild-camping adventure you’re after, have a look at Lions Row, a spacious back‑to‑basics site on a working farm just outside Ufford. It’s completely surrounded by countryside, but only a handy five minutes’ drive from the pubs, takeaways and shops in Wickham Market. You'll park at the edge of a three-acre meadow and walk around 50–250 yards to the pitches, which are mown into the long grass. It’s a clever spot for families as it’s a mile from the nearest road, making it quiet and safe for kids to roam freely without any danger from traffic. As this is wild camping, facilities are minimal: drinking water, a simple washing-up sink, compost loos and basic gas-heated outdoor showers are your lot. However, you’ll wake up to birdsong every morning and go to sleep by starlight on clear nights; just remember to bring torches and batteries for after-dark wanderings. The views are peaceful and rural, and the field is bordered by deciduous woodland – great for exercising any four-legged pals – criss-crossed with footpaths leading to country pubs (there are four within half an hour’s walk). It’s also close to heritage attractions such as Sutton Hoo (10 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Lions Row offers a peaceful, back-to-basics camping experience in a beautiful Suffolk countryside setting, praised for its wonderful views, wildlife, and friendly, helpful hosts. Guests enjoyed spacious pitches, campfires, and the convenience of a nearby pub. While facilities like compost toilets and showers are functional, some feedback indicated a need for more facilities and privacy during peak times, with the campsite management actively working on improvements. The ground can be hard, and pitches may have unevenness.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Spoilt by the glorious weather, there was nothing not to like here at Lions Row. If you're looking for back to basics, simple (almost) wild camping, this is your ticket.

Wonderful views and sounds of nature (watching the rabbits dart about at sunrise was amazing) - topped off by lovely hosts, Charlie and Jess; I had a brilliant stay.

The compost loos/chaps urinals and showers all do the job and well placed. Sinks and fresh water available; not much more you can ask for.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked I had a such a lovely stay at lions row! Tucked away deep in the Suffolk countryside, with beautiful scenery it is the perfect campsite for a secluded, peaceful get away. I ended up extending my stay as it was exactly what I was looking for. The showers were hot and clean, toilets were also clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful. No complaints at all and would definitely recommend a visit.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely peaceful setting. Nice sunsets and close to lots of nice walks.
Good space around pitches. No one was crammed in.
I always appreciate a site that allows fires.
I hope the site can grow and we can visit again in future.

Disliked If you’re camping, make sure you have good beds, looks like the field was worked in a previous use and there are some furrows left. We were in a van so it was ok for us.
Needs more showers for busy times of year. It would be nice to control the temperature. I got a bit too hot one day. I’m sure on colder days that wound be a blessing. But on a 30 degree day, a cool shower would have been amazing.
Needs more loos and maybe some privacy for the urinals. I’m not bothered but I can see that putting some people off.
We were there on a busy weekend and the rubbish piled up quite a lot and overflowed the two bins on site.
None of these things would put me off staying again and it seems like a new site that is learning the ropes. So just posting this for anyone who might be after more creature comfort.

From the manager: Hi Tom,

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful, detailed, and supportive review! We are so glad you enjoyed the peaceful sunsets, the spacious pitches, and campfires under the stars.

You hit the nail on the head—we are still relatively new and always "learning the ropes," so feedback like yours is incredibly valuable to us as we grow. We really appreciate your notes regarding the shower temperatures, the extra facilities, and the bins during peak weekends. We are actively working on improvements, so this helps us know exactly where to focus our efforts.

Thank you for recommending us, and we can’t wait to welcome you back in the future to show you how we've grown!

Best wishes,

Charlie & Jess

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Great location away from traffic noise. Nice easy walk to the white Lion with good ale.

Spacious pitches which were easily accessible from the track.

Friendly hosts great tasting venison.

Disliked Nothing really. However, the toilets could do with some wood chips, sawdust to sprinkle down as they were starting to smell a bit in the heat over the last 2 days.

From the manager: Hi Andres,

Thanks for the fantastic review! We're so glad you enjoyed the quiet location, the easy access, and our venison.

We really appreciate your note about the toilets in the heat—feedback like this helps us improve, and we will get some wood chips/sawdust sorted for the next warm spell.

Hope to see you again soon for another peaceful getaway!

Local attractions

Start your Suffolk wanderings with a potter around the historic market town of Woodbridge (15 minutes’ drive), where you can stroll along the River Deben and tour the tide mill (one of two left working in the country). For further immersion in English culture, visit the burial site at National Trust - Sutton Hoo (15 minutes) to see the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove and ship excavated in the 1990s. Continuing with the heritage theme, Orford Castle (25 minutes) is a monumental 12th-century edifice built by King Henry II; it is open for exploration of the keep, chapel and towers. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) might also be on your sightseeing schedule for its rampart walks and 19th-century workhouse museum. If the kids get restless, ditch the history lessons and head for the shingle Aldeburgh beach (half an hour), or have a stroll around the salt marshes and heathland of Deben Peninsula National Landscape (15 minutes). You can also go kayaking and paddleboarding on the Deben (10 minutes), meet rare horses at The Suffolk Punch Trust (20 minutes) and have a day communing with sheep, goats and alpacas at Easton Farm Park (15 minutes).
