  • Well-maintained and green site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Lake and nature trail on site
  • On-site village shop and off-licence; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Travel five miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline and you’ll arrive at this little gem on the outskirts of Wenhaston. The gorgeous, well-maintained grounds at this smart site are just part of the attention to detail all around the park, which has been carefully laid out by the friendly and helpful owners. There's greenery all around here: this small and pretty site has its own nature trail and lake, and is surrounded by acres of countryside for hikes and rambles. If walking isn't your thing, hire bikes from the Southwold Bike Centre (20 minutes' drive away) to pedal around the flats of Suffolk; horse riding's pretty popular in the area too, or you could go golfing at Halesworth Golf Club five minutes' drive away. Taking things (much easier), the local pub is a 10-minute walk down the road. Heathside Caravans has a village shop and an off-licence on site for those holiday essentials, and a well-maintained shower block for guests' use. For more supplies. the village of Halesworth is under 15 minutes' drive away and Aldeburgh, Snape and Beccles are all within half an hour.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Very good. Clean campsite. Nice atmosphere. Fields for play/sport. Good location near the sea.

Disliked Would have like another shower. But only queued once as there’s bathrooms in the pods and mobile homes.

From the manager: We also have the family room/disabled with extra shower for all to use.

Shepherd's hut

Liked The location was great for Southwold and neighbouring areas. Shop very reasonable and well stocked. Nice quite site and well spaced pitches. Facilities very clean.

Disliked Unfortunately we felt extremely uncomfortable in the hut. It was extremely hot and we were getting bitten by mosquitoes and didn’t want to open the windows for fear of being bitten. The futons had seen better days and weren’t comfortable for two people. I had to rely on a friend to give me a blow up bed to sleep on. There was enough room for the blow up bed. In the cooler temps you’re fine. I suppose it’s dependent on the weather. I think I would have been more comfortable in a tent to be honest - especially in the heat. Microwave and fridge great. Fridge big enough for all your essentials.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I'm afraid we are not in control of the weather or mosquitoes, but there are two mattress toppers supplied for the futon sofa beds.

Glamping Pod

Liked Great location, easy to find and close to some lovely beaches and towns. The campsite was quiet. The pod was comfortable and had everything that we needed. The wifi worked well for us. It was great to have the nature trail and to be surrounded by open fields. My children loved being able to play football and rounders.

Disliked Although it was generally clean, we did find some dust and tissues under the bunk bed.
The bunk bed mattresses were uncomfortable but my children managed to sleep ok regardless after a busy day of activities.

Glamping Pod

Liked The peace and quiet is a real winner.
Lots of space for children to play safely and great location.
The pod was clean and beds were comfy. And the shower was hot and powerful.
On-site shop was an extra and the location is close enough to a range of activities by car.
Staff lovely.

FHU grass campsite

Liked The shop, very friendly lady. Site very tidy.
Slightly regimented in rows but easy hook up and water. Loads of space if you have children.
Would recommend for families with children.

Disliked Only one shower for women if the site was full likely to queue, only 2 loos. Only ONE loo in mens toilet. The fact there were NO dog poo bins you had to use one across the road. The beautiful nature trail had 4 lots of dog poo on the paths, sad as this is for children too.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We expect guest to be to be responsible with there dogs, but we are afraid not all guest are! the dog poo bin is a 15 second walk off site.
We also have a family room/disabled shower/toilet that can be used by everyone.
We don't actually have people queuing.

Local attractions

After all the walking, cycling, horse riding and golfing, get stuck into the area's history at the 12th-century fortress of Framlingham Castle, half an hour's drive away. Once the refuge of Mary Tudor, this fab place now has exhibitions, themed trails and an audio tour covering its centuries of history: enough to keep young Horrible Histories fans entertained too. Arty sorts will know that Suffolk is Constable country: if this is you, come armed with camera or paintbox to snap and sketch the countryside, harbour and coastal views around the area. You could also take a trip to art complex the Snape Maltings on the Alde river, for events, activities and evening entertainment in the concert hall. Seaside? But of course. Have a stroll around Southwold and its colourful beach huts, or drive half an hour north to Lowestoft for seaside amusements and Pleasurewood Hills, a nifty tucked away theme park with rollercoasters and attractions for all. Walberswick beach, around a 15-minute drive from Heathside, is a popular spot for crabbing. If you’re staying at Heathside for a while, set off early and spend the whole day on the Norfolk Broads (about an hour and 15 minutes' drive north, or drive south for around an hour and a half to the villages of Long Melford and Lavenham with their medieval timber-framed houses.
