  • Simple Cambridgeshire farm campsite 15 minutes’ drive from Royston
  • Imperial War Museum Duxford and Cambridge both half an hour’s drive
  • Peaceful grass pitches with hot showers available; livestock on site
Prefer somewhere off the beaten track? The camping field at Eastgate Farm may only be 15 minutes’ drive from Royston and half an hour from Cambridge, but both places seem far, far away from this peaceful spot. Just a handful of level grass pitches are available on the small farm site, with no-frills facilities stretching to a shower and toilet, washing-up sink, water fill-up and waste disposal. Barbecues are permitted on the camping field (you’ll need to bring all the gear with you), and you can stock up on groceries in the supermarket at Royston. If you’d rather have a complete break from cooking, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, or you could make a night of it in Cambridge restaurants. A few practicalities now: as this is a rural working farm with livestock, please expect the sights, sounds and smells of a farm. The camping field is off-grid, so remember torches for night-time meanderings, and while the site is level and flat, it can be wet in early winter.

What customers say

This peaceful, rural campground has spacious, flat sites with charming country and sheep views. Guests loved the friendly owners, available fire pits, and tasty farm produce. Facilities are basic but clean and functional, though some suggest upgrades. Road noise and wasps in warmer months were noted by a few.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Small site so not too much noise. Owner was very nice and welcoming. Good location for Royston and it was lovely to sit and watch the sheep in the neighbouring field.

Some toys onsite and a small swing set for the kids to play with were a welcome surprise

Lovely sausages, eggs and bacon from the farm for breakfast

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Flat, spacious pitches. Ground soft enough to get pegs in easily. The proprietor, Nick, was friendly and available. Lovely views over pastures with flocks of sheep. Play area and provision of games in the small hut in the communal area. A peaceful atmosphere. The other campers were friendly and quiet.

Disliked The sink area is a little tired and in need of repair, such as the sloping worktop. The table and chairs in the communal area needed a clean. But all useable and reflected in price. Some passing traffic noise, but only occasional, not constant.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked We liked the fact it was a working farm and the scenery around the area was beautiful & peaceful and reasonably priced for summertime, also it wasn’t a large campsite just bigger enough for a number of vans.

Disliked There was nothing we disliked about this campsite.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The space of the pitches. The flat ground. Well tendered grass etc. looking out into the sheep. The peace and quiet. The friendly farmer. The facilities (inc hot water).

Disliked If you have a problem with ‘basic’ facilities then look elsewhere!
