Bursts of colour to liven up your stay

General

  • Peaceful, well-maintained park in the grounds of a landscaped garden
  • Close to the A50; a 20-minute drive from Alton Towers
  • Barbecues permitted; two pubs within a mile's radius

Fancy treating yourself to a sumptuous stay in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse? Park Hall Farm in the Staffordshire village of Church Leigh is a fab quiet site within easy reach of the gardens and high-adrenaline thrills of Alton Towers, the UK's biggest theme park.

Head here for peaceful times and space to set up all your holiday accoutrements – the plot sizes are generous, meaning you can look forward to a bit of extra comfort and privacy. Taking the time to wander around this Grade II listed site is highly recommended – there are gorgeous landscaped gardens where green-fingered guests can seek inspiration and calming water features including a waterfall and moat.

In the warmer months, those seeking a swish garden party vibe can head down to the marquee for snacks and drinks on the well-tended lawn. You're also free to grill your own grub on a barbecue or head out to one of the two pubs located within a mile of the site. For the nearest supermarket, drive 10 minutes up the road to Cheadle.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you at Park Hall Farm – you can be pretty sure they'll appreciate the walkies to be had around the site and in the surrounding countryside. For proper outdoor adventure over rugged terrain, make tracks for the Peak District National Park (about 40 minutes' drive).

Clean, tidy and quiet site. Ideal for an overnight break.10/19/2020

We were pitched on an area which was completely hard standing, which was great as the weather was mixed and the nearby grass pitches were sodden. Easy hook up to the electric, water tap very close by, chemical toilet waste area close by and just a short walk to the main toilets and shower block. Far enough away from the nearby main roads that noise was not a problem at all.

    Disliked:

The only downside to the pitches is that they are not particularly picturesque and adjacent to a barn of some description. During the afternoon there was quite a lot of traffic passing by into what appeared to be a business premises. I would stress, however, that this was not a significant issue and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Level ground, peaceful location. Hook up point

    Disliked:

Miles of single track coming from South, north access better. Mens shower block had two showers, only one seemed to heat, lock missing on inner door so had to bolt main door meaning only one at a time. Gents floors and general cleaning required. No obvious dirty water disposal.

There were not many people on site but they were all really nice, the grounds were very well kept, the grass lawns were beautifully mowed, there was plenty of hand sanitizer and plenty of toilet rolls in the toilet, I didn't see the manager but he was in contact with me and extremely helpful, plus the weather was glorious:)

    Disliked:

Grounds were lovely and we had the field to ourselves the first night. Toilets a bit of a distance but clean and spacious

    Disliked:

The noise - the site is very close to the motorway and provided a constant background noise to what would otherwise be peaceful. There was no onsite takeaway as advertised and the local pub does not serve food until Friday so we had to make a hasty trip to a local supermarket to ensure we were fully self sufficient.

Local attractions

Once you've ticked off Alton Towers (20 minutes' drive), take intrepid kids go-karting at the National Forest Adventure Farm (30 minutes), Go Apeing at Cannock Chase (35 minutes) or pony trekking at the local riding stables (15 minutes). Drayton Manor (50 minutes), another top-tier theme park, is also doable for the day if you're staying at Park Hall Farm. (Tiddlers turned away from the biggest rides at Alton? Drayton Manor has more rides accessible to kids under 120 centimetres.)

Action-packed activities not pushing the right buttons? Chilled garden explores are on the cards at the Trentham Estate (25 minutes), where there's a mile-long lake, cascading weir and acres of fab foliage. Other floral displays can be seen at Shugborough Hall (35 minutes), a stately home with walled gardens and a hands-on farm museum. Last, but emphatically not least, is Chatsworth House (an hour and 10 minutes) with its 25 square miles of ornamental grounds.

If these aristocratic surrounds have you hankering for the high life, spend a while watching horses clearing hurdles at Uttoxeter Racecourse (15 minutes) or settle in for a soak at Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat (20 minutes).

Must see

  • Alton Towers Resort (8.3 kilometers)
  • Sudbury Hall (13.4 kilometers)
