Potter’s Lodge

General

  • Luxury glampsite with hot tub, 12 miles from the Peak District
  • Everything provided including linen and luxury toiletries
  • Finnish barbecue cabin, cooking cabin, breakfast and private firepits

Settle down for a whole lot of luxury near the Peak District at Peake's Retreats, a glampsite in the Staffordshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Burton upon Trent.

The Peake's Retreats setting is champion for outdoor days close by or further afield, with Dovedale's limestone valleys half an hour’s drive away and several standout walks from just outside the site (including one to the local village Anslow and the much-recommended Bell’s Inn). Hardier hikes and climbs in the Peak District are about 12 miles away.

But you might just want to laze around on site instead… If so, the accommodation here is set up to provide everything you need, from towels and bed linen to cutlery, plates and glasses; there are also luxury bathrooms with Neal’s Yard toiletries and lashings of hot water.

Another huge highlight of the site (see pics) is the large and swish Finnish barbecue cabin for cooking over the coals whatever the weather – although you could also sort supper in the kitchen cabin with its big electric range. Outdoors, there’s a firepit flanking each unit and a massive communal barbecue in the picnic area next to the playground. And, as another top highlight, breakfast is included in the price.

Need more convincing? Stroll over to the eight-person hot tub for a submerge beneath the Staffordshire skies – it can be booked privately if you prefer…

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, we very much appreciate the time our guests take to give feedback and a 10/10 review is always very gratefully received.

The photos are beautiful as well. Thank you.

It is always worth mentioning that the toilets and showers are a short walk from the yurts so this is incredibly useful feedback for future guests.

In the past I have been asked how far the showers are and so I have timed the walk; the furthest away yurt takes 1 minute and 28 seconds to walk to from the shower building at a leisurely pace.

Unfortunately we could not put the toilets any closer to the yurts due to there being no drainage on the yurt field, and therefore, like many other camp/glampsites, ours are a short walk away.

Thanks again for choosing to stay with Peake’s Retreats, we hope to see you again in the future.

Kind regards
Sarah Peake

    We stayed in the yurt and it was very nice clean, wood burning stove was lot of fun to keep running in early January;
    Very high standard shower facilities;
    Fully equipped shared kitchen;
    Very nice tea rooms across the road.

    Disliked:

    The area is not the best for walkers, most of the farmers around the site had done all they can to legally discourage walkers getting around. For example, putting electric fence in front of the 1m wide river which rambler is expected to jump over and then catch on that electric fence;

    No running water in the otherwise very nice kitchen building;

    To get to the closes pub you will have to walk on very busy single track road with many cars speeding. Would not dare walking there wen it's dark outside.

From the manager...

Hi Andris

Thank you for taking the time to write us a review, and we are pleased to see that you would recommend us to us your friends as a place to stay, as well as enjoying the shower and toilet facilities, which we did put a lot of thought and effort into so thank you.

With regard to your comments; unfortunately we are unable to control what other farmers do with their land, I personally walk my cockapoo all over the fields around us and have not encountered a problem with restricted areas. Although I do believe that I know the area you have mentioned above and there was a bridge over the small brook that runs through the public footpath, I can only assume that the farmer (not us) has taken it down to replace. I am happy to report this to the local authority, as a bridge- I believe- should be a requirement if there is a stream/brook in the way. Other than this I have personally never experienced any problems with walking our area, and many of our other guests have commented on the lovely walks our area has to offer; such as the Hanbury circular routes, Jackson’s bank, branston water park, as well as the fields leading directly from us- which we regularly see ramblers using.

You are correct in pointing out that our cooking cabin does not have running water, however it is worth mentioning for any future guests that a short walk away we have a separate washing up area where drinking water can also be obtained. As with many other campsites we find that having the two areas separated works well and creates a natural flow of ‘traffic’ from our guests using the facilities, and therefore everybody is not trying to use the same space at the same time.

With regard to the closest pub, our location is very rural which we think adds to the charm. If we were located any closer to the local village we feel that the ambiance of a quiet rural retreat would be somewhat different to that which it is now. If any of our guests enquire about the closest pub before they visit us, I always let them know that the pub is located 1.2 miles from us. You can either walk over the fields following the public footpaths or down the country lane into the village. We consider the lane to be reasonably quiet, but it is always worth noting that it has a 60mph speed limit and no footpaths. We are always happy to point our guests in the direction of a suitable pub/restaurant with their specific needs in mind, as well as answer any of these questions before their stay.

Fore example: this weekend just gone we had a lovely young couple stay with us, they contacted us beforehand to find out details of the local pub, and I made a reservation on their behalf. They had a lovely evening meal and then walked back down the lane afterwards, with their torches. When I spoke with them the next day they told me they had encountered just one car on the way home but had thoroughly enjoyed their walk back. Of course we aren’t saying we would recommend our guests walk down a dark road at night, merely relaying others experiences.

Again many thanks for your review, hopefully both your review and the above comments will prove useful to others considering booking with us.

Many thanks
