  • Fully-furnished bell tent in the Staffordshire countryside
  • A five-minute drive from Alton Towers; 20 minutes to the Peak District
  • Freezer, gas hob and kettle access; small shop 20 minutes’ walk away
Unwind with valley, forest and riverside rambles, or sign up for a few thrills at Alton Towers… five minutes’ drive from the Alton Towers theme park and 20 minutes’ drive from the Peak District National Park, the bell tent at Tommy’s Tents will soon be your base for all sorts of adventures and activities… If walking’s already on your mind (which it should be, in the spectacular Staffordshire countryside), the Dimmingsdale Valley & Furnace Forest Walks are five minutes’ drive away. Take the river walk, mountain bike in the valley or go bouldering on the rocks (with your own equipment) if you like. The Peak District National Park has more in the way of scenic walks. There are the stepping stones at Dovedale (25 minutes) and excellent views from Thorpe Cloud just above the river. You might like to hike or climb The Roaches (half an hour) too: myths make this place all the more exciting. Back at your base camp, if that’s what you’d like to call this gorgeous, fully-furnished five-metre bell tent in the vicinity of the Lower Micklin Touring Park, there are plenty of creature comforts for the more restful mornings, afternoons or evenings. A made-up double bed with an electric blanket, lighting and five-amp electric sockets for charging devices are all provided. When your tummy’s ready for some comfort too, cooking facilities in the tent include a single gas ring, pots, coolbox, cups and crockery. For the more complicated dishes, the washing-up area in the facilities block has an electric kettle and freezer. With a small shop 20 minutes’ walk away, sourcing food is easy enough. There’s also plenty of space for two extra children (under 16 years’ old) to sleep on camp beds available upon request – just bring your own bedding.

Local attractions

While rollercoasters and theme park rides might be the first thing that come to mind when you think of Alton Towers (five minutes’ drive), Alton Towers Waterpark (10 minutes’ drive) also has huge waterslides. If that's not your thing, then it's worth checking out the adjoining Extraordinary Golf (10 minutes) and Alton Towers Spa (10 minutes) too. Waterworld (half an hour) is another water park (this time with a Black Hole slide, lazy river and assault course). Wildlife parks are easy to find too: walk with penguins at the Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) or watch the Barbary macaques run free around Trentham Monkey Forest (35 minutes). A steam train journey long been on your bucket list? Then, board the Churnet Valley Railway (15 minutes) into the Staffordshire moorlands or the Foxfield Light Railway Society (20 minutes) into the countryside. For racing events instead, Uttoxeter Racecourse (15 minutes) is close by.

Bell tent

Liked: Loved the fact that all we had to do was take clothes and towels. Loved the way we could just get out of the car after a long journey and everything was beautifully set up already. The tent looks awesome. The bed was really comfy. Great for charging up phones and tablets etc. Cool box that you could swap out the ice blocks from the freezer and next to the freezer is an electric kettle. All the facilities were lovely and clean. Always hot water in the showers. Being so close to alton towers is the biggest thing for me. I forgot how tired you get after a day or two walking round. It's only 7 minutes away and that's if there's traffic. It's also really quiet. I expected it to be a bit noisy but it's so peaceful. There are restaurants and pubs just a short walk away too. I'd defo recommend it. 100% we'll be staying here again the next time we come to alton towers.

Disliked: The only thing I could say about and it's not even on the campsite, was a couple of the stiles on the footpath walks to the villages are in need of stabilising and are a bit overgrown. But that's really nit picking.
